The beer, designed once again by IRON MAIDEN vocalist and ale aficionado Bruce Dickinson along with Robinsons’ Head Brewer Martyn Weeks, takes its inspiration from a very early Robinsons recipe which was first brewed in the 1850’s; a time when porter style beer was becoming increasingly popular in Britain.

Bruce Dickinson explains: “I like tasting outside the box. Stouts and porters were virgin territory for me so I just went by feel. Martyn and I hope we have created a new take on a classic beer and one which I hope will tickle the taste buds of ale fans in a pleasantly unexpected way.”

At 6.8% in bottle or 5.8% ABV in cask, TROOPER Red ‘N’ Black is the strongest beer in the range to date.

Bottle shared. Pours a deep amber with a finger of foam that lingers. Malt-forward nose with some light chocolate and peppery hops. Thin but good caramel character. A bit of chocolate. Well-balanced.

Bottle from Craft Beer Kings. Pours brown with a slight beige head. Aroma is med dark fruit with some floral hop. Med + body. Flavor is med dark fruit, hint of chocolate, floral hop, treacle that’s not excessively sweet. This isn’t dry, it’s rather far from the typical USA porter, it’s not very bitter. Yet it works quite nicely for me. Liking it.

Bottle from the LCBO. Clear dark burgundy under a tiny quick fading off white head. Nose is roast, dark fruit, coffee and light vanilla and nuts. Taste follows the nose with some wet cardboard in the background. Mouth is medium- slick with soft carbonation. Just OK. 7-/3-/6/3-/11

330ml bottle picked up at Vinmonopolet Langnes. Dark brown-reddish body, clear. Remaining fawn coloured head. Spotty lacing. Black malts and black fruits on the nose. Taste of brittle caramel, dark chocolate, nuts, and dark fruits. Drying roasted ending. Quite easy to drink. Rounded mouth feel. Good beer from a great rock group supporting the right football team (Tromsø 03.12.2016).

0,33l bottle. Pours ruby red with thin tan head that dissipated almost immediately. Aroma is dark bready malts with some caramel, dried forest fruits and strong earthy hop notes. Flavor is caramel, again some dark bready malt, toffee, caramel, dried plums, light smoky and strong earthy presence. It’s light sweet with medium, slightly unpleasant bitterness. Medium body, sticky texture and light to medium carbonation. Finish is quite long bitterness.
