Impossibly reddish in color (due to the beets) with nitro cascade fading into a pink cap of stable foam, great clarity. Seeing the beer in the glass shows the obvious resemblance to a slice of red velvet cake (red cake on the bottom topped with a layer of creamy white frosting). But the similarities don’t end there. The aroma is dominated by chocolate with earthy notes of beets and subtle wafts of roast coco. The flavor is similar to the aroma but with faint roast and hop bitterness coming in at the end balance it out, not cloying or overly sweet. The mouthfeel is medium and the finish is luxuriously smooth. It’s dessert served in a pint glass!

12 ounce bottle from Whole Foods Wauwatosa. Clear ruby (BEET JUICE!!!), large foamy tan head, good retention. Aroma of sweet oats, honey, toast and a bit of cherry juice. The taste is oats, nuts, honey, grain, cherries, citrus, hints of spice. Medium bodied, low carbonation. Nice!

12 ounce bottle. Bright red color. Small creamy beige head. Faint medicinal nose. Flavor is perplexing. Some resemblance to chocolate, but the other flavors are just off. Not sure what happened here, but it missed the mark in my opinion. Kudos for going outside the box, not every at bat is a home run.

12 oz. bottle, pours a clear bright pinkish ruby red with a small beige head. Aroma brings out the beets upfront, with a touch of oat and not much else. Flavour is truly bizarre, with a weird mix of herbal beet-like notes, but none of the other purported notes. Not sure what the hell they were going for here, but this is just bad. Herbal. earthy and nothing pleasant about it. Shit.

Bottle from Total Wine in Sacramento, CA. Pours very ruddy copper with an arguably pink tinged otherwise white head. Aroma is sort of sugary chocolate. Med body or nearly. Flavor is sort of chocolate, not sure about beets. It’s kind of like weird cake frosting. Not dry, but not bitter. Except maybe chocolate bitter. It’s very different, and I wouldn’t want a sixer in an evening, but points for doing something very different. It is in the cake universe, flavorwise.

12 ounce nitro bottle into pint glass, bottled on 2/1/2017. Pours slightly hazy ruby red, light pinkish/orange color with a 2 finger dense and rocky light pink head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a large cap that lasts. Thick creamy lacing coats the glass as you drink. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of milk chocolate, cocoa, vanilla, cream, cake batter, bread dough, and candi sugar; with lighter notes of berries, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of bready malt, cocoa, vanilla, sugar, and light earthy hop/fruity yeast notes; with solid strength. Taste of big milk chocolate, cocoa, vanilla, cream, cake batter, bread dough, and candi sugar; with lighter notes of berries, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast/roasted earthiness. Light herbal/spicy hop and cocoa/roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of milk chocolate, cocoa, vanilla, cream, cake batter, bread dough, candi sugar, herbal, and yeast/roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of bready malt, cocoa, vanilla, sugar, and light earthy hop/fruity yeast flavors; with a great malt/cocoa bitter/sweet balance, and zero cloying/astringent flavors after the finish. Light dryness from lingering hop/roast bitterness, increasing through the glass. Low carbonation and light-medium body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/grainy, and slightly silky/sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 5.5%. Overall this is a very good golden oatmeal stout style. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of bready malt, cocoa, vanilla, sugar, and light earthy hop/fruity yeast flavors; very smooth and easy to drink. Just a bit too increasingly bitter/drying; but it was still very enjoyable and had lot of nice well balanced cake-like flavors.

Clear cranberry colored pour with a tiny white head and good retention. Minimal lacing. Smooth and creamy mouthfeel. Thin for the style. Chocolate flavor up front. It doesn’t look like a stout but the taste is there. The appearance plays mind games. Close your eyes, drink and enjoy.

Bottle from Albertsons. Pours out colored like CranberrySour juice, pinkish head. Sweet, cake smell. Taste is also a bit sweet, vanilla, frosting. Dry finish, taste fades fast. Interesting novelty, but not worth the hefty price tag.
