Stepping up to the podium, Brettanomyces collects his notes; fragments of ideas on melody, thematic development, recapitulation, mutation, thematic variation, restatement, and so on. Water, Hops, and Malted Barley sit first, second and third chair. The toasted oak walls await the sonic wort, anticipation fills the hall. The whole room watches, bated breath, as the Maestro, wiping phenol, guaiacol, and isovaleric acid off his brow, raises the baton and begins…
This is a Lagunitas-ified version of a traditional Farmhouse ale, aged in red wine oak barrels and funkied up with Brettanomyces yeast. It’s a golden saison-sour with a nice tartness that leaves your buds quenched and wanting more. Proost!

Bottle from Craft Brewed. Pours a clear, copperish gold with a small bit of eggshell colored head that dissipates. Oaky and cream-forward nose with some light cherry stones, vanilla and funk. Creamy yogurt, lemon, cherry skin tartness on the palate. Some grass, light vinegar. Very Flemish. Not a saison but more of a oud gold. Interesting nonetheless. --- Beer merged from original tick of Lagunitas Eroica on 27 Nov 2017 at 21:28 - Score: 7. Original review text: Tart cherry pits and oak on the nose, some almond. Candi sugar, tart cherry and more oak on the palate. Feels simple, but well done Flanders

Bottle sent by Lagunitas for review. This starts with a very clear, light amber color with a fizzy head. The smell during the pour has some red wine and some grassy funk as you’d want in a farmhouse style. Eroica is right up front with its tart, but it’s softened by an edge of that red wine and oak. After a while, the general feeling is of a tart strawberry juice, with some whipped cream on the side. Its sourness encourages just the right rate of sipping for its slightly higher abv. I go with the general pairing recommendation for sour beers: soft cheese like a Brie; to match the e French/Flemish character of this style’s origin. Or other dessert items with a soft dairy component, like a cheesecake, cannoli or a flan.

Clear amber and deep copper coloured body with a super-fast-dying pure head, only a centimetre tall at the largest. Aroma of vinegar, soured funk, a bit of earthy malts, a little key lime and pure lemon citrus tartiness and finishes with some mellow sugars. Medium-bodied; Strong funky oak dryness at first with a lot of the soured, barrel-aged funk that has a lot of the dry charactistics, some more mellow sweetness and a big yeast kick at the end that shows a bit of brett and some unfinished sugars. Aftertaste shows some dry apple and fruity kicks, but the sour funk is definetely around and showing some pungent flavours with the citrus and funky grain flavours that finish a bit more robust and reserved. Overall, an interesting beer that shows some light Saison-y notes, but the majority is a soured beer that shows more of the former, in terms of malt and yeast along with the rest of the components. I sampled this thirty-two ounce fill in a growler on 19-November-2017 for US$8,00 at Whole Foods in Fairfax (Fair Lakes), Virginia on sampled at home in Washington on 20-November-2017.

Bottle from Total Wine in Sacramento, CA. Pours darkish gold with a slight white head. Rather transient. Aroma is light pale stone fruit, very light, with some definite funk. Strangely enough it has an aura of barrel aging of the vinous sort. Med body or better. It's funky and fruity. This has a BFM sort of flavor. Much milder and nowhere near so acidic, but the Brett is shining a bit and the "virtual wood" aspect is quite pleasing. An excellent and tasty "Imperial Saison" virtually aged in funky wine barrels. How did they do this?

On tap at PIB 2017, pours a hazy golden with a creamy small off-white head. Aroma brings out light saison yeast, some funk and a bit of tart citrus. Flavour is along the same lines, with tart citrus, some farmhouse funk, and saison yeast. Tart and funky, with a great balance. Very good.
