It’s been said, “It’s easier to brew an extremely hoppy beer than an extremely balanced beer.” And you know us, we are always looking for the easy way out, so we jumped on the West Coast IPA Bandwagon and brewed this dry and hoppy ale. “Surly’s a little bit of a one-trick pony, they just brew gimmick beers,” and maybe we are OVERRATED, but at the end of the day, it’s just a beer. If you like it, great, so do we. If you only liked us when we were small, then leave this one on the shelf. Let one of the fanboys grab it.

Can thanks to Sgt. B (Brian), not on ratebeer. Sampled on January 23, 2014.Hazy honey golden color, fluffy white head. Sweet, hoppy, citrus scent. Sweet, hoppy, citrus, bitter taste. Bitter, resin aftertaste. Medium to smooth mouthfeel, high bitterness.Smells lovely, a bit to the high side of the bitterness in taste for me though.

Sample at the Ale Wine & Spirits beer tasting on 01/24/2014: Hazy orange-gold color with a medium bone white head that diminishes gradually. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Citrus, hops and malt in the nose. Medium-bodied with flavors of citrusy hops, toasted malt and pine. The finish is moderately bitter with a grassy hops and grapefruit aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

Can from kbutler1 in a trade. Thanks Kevin! Pours an almost clear dark orange with a half finger of white head. Aroma of citrus and tropical fruits with a hint of pine. Taste is heavily bitter. Pine at first then loads of grapefruit. Hop-heavy but still very balanced. Medium bodied with a surprisingly creamy texture. Lively carbonation and a long finish. Overall, great. I’ve had some good and some not so good from surly, but I would definitely put this in the winner column.

Purchased at Binny’s in Chicago, IL; enjoyed at home on a snowy Saturday pre-holiday party afternoon. Appearance is a lightly cloudy bright gold with a very pronounced white lightly bubbly head. Aroma is a mixture of citrus and cone hops. Taste finishes nice and dry with grassy notes, light spice, lemon, floral. It’s well balanced and pretty good, nothing groundbreaking, just a solid IPA. Well done!

16 oz. can purchased at Binny’s, Lincoln Park location with a canning date of 11/13/13. Orange color with fast drying head in a snifter. The nose is mostly pine and traces of herbal hops. Large amount of pale malts balance the pine, citrus and herbal hops. Flavor has more malt then hops. I’m sure the hops are dying in this can or Surly named this IPA correctly. Clever name that kind of lives up to the beer itself. The weakest offering I’ve sampled from this top notch brewery.

Bright Orange and sticky lacing. Quite resinous and piney on the nose. Very nice. Lots of sweetness and crystal malts. Piney with needles and sticky / dank. Very nice.

Can shared by KBL. Nice golden, big fruity hop nose, lots of tropical elements, citrus, pine. Just the right sweetness, with full biscuity body and great hops. Excellent stuff.

Can picked up at Mikkeller & Friends for 75DKK shared with KyotoLefty. A lovely clear copper color, a great hoppy fruity herbal aroma. The taste is clear bitter hoppiness with a good dankness. Very nice.

Aroma is grassy. Flavors are grassy, pine and herbal
Decent, but not really hoppy. Yep, the name overrated, this is good but it’s no west coast IPA.
