Black Metal, a.k.a. Iron Sword, a.k.a. Blackened Death, a.k.a. El Martillo del Muerte, is a cruel and punishing beer fermented by the sheer force of its awesome will. Best enjoyed while pumping out blast beats, summoning trolls, or enjoying a nice, leisurely reading of the Necronomicon.

Black Metal takes inspiration from both the English and Franco-Belgian brewing traditions. We combine English specialty malts with well water, local base malt from our friends at Blacklands, and wild fermentation with our mixed culture of brewers yeast and native yeast and bacteria.

Admin Note: In 2015, Jester King released the first batch (Batch 16) of Black Metal brewed using the brewery’s house mixed culture of microorganisms consisting of brewers yeast and native yeast and bacteria harvested from the air and wildflowers around the brewery. The previous batches of Farmhouse Black Metal was brewed using a French Saison yeast.

From a 75 cl. bottle, batch 20. Pours black with a massive tan head. Aromas of dank hay and espresso. Flavors are bitter roast with some wild tartness. I like it.

Harsh, aggressive citric-berry sourness against a classic imperial stout profile. What can I say--some people love this combination. Me? Not so much. Does what the label says it should do. Not for me, but if puckeringly sour stouts are your thing, by all means...

Bottle shared at Lucky Bamboo share. Thanks Mike! Pours a deep, pitch black with a small bit of white foam that dissipates. Tart berry, wood and roasted malt aromas. Coffee, woody brett notes and berry notes. Funky and fruity with a roasty finish.

Malty and roasted and sour back?! Weeeeeird. If it wasn't a farmhouse I'd say it was a skunked stout. Pours great though.

Draught at Mikkeller Baghaven. Pitch black with a thin lightly tanned head. Tart fruity aroma with yeasts, dark malts and funky notes. Taste is sour. Full body with an oliy texture and a soft carbonation. Finishes tart fruity with dark malts and yeasts. Nice dark Sour.

Tap at TCBW2018, batch #19. Pours black. Aroma is sour, fruity, roasty. Flavor is sour and bitter, roast, ashy notes. Finish is also sour and ashy. Overall: okish I guess, but the sour ashy combo doesn't really work for me. --- Beer merged from original tick of Black Metal Farmhouse Imperial Stout (Batch 16+) on 04 May 2018 at 17:09 - Score: 6. Draught @ Tallinn Craft Beer Weekend 2018. Smooth, slightly roasty and funky with some farmyard and licorice. Okay.

Tap at TCBW. Opaque black colour, good brownish head. Toasted, some licorice, wood and light tartness. Full-bodied. Citric front, toastyness, licorice, wood. Sounds messy, but has funky balance.
