Black Metal, a.k.a. Iron Sword, a.k.a. Blackened Death, a.k.a. El Martillo del Muerte, is a cruel and punishing beer fermented by the sheer force of its awesome will. Best enjoyed while pumping out blast beats, summoning trolls, or enjoying a nice, leisurely reading of the Necronomicon.
Black Metal takes inspiration from both the English and Franco-Belgian brewing traditions. We combine English specialty malts with well water, local base malt from our friends at Blacklands, and wild fermentation with our mixed culture of brewers yeast and native yeast and bacteria.
Admin Note: In 2015, Jester King released the first batch (Batch 16) of Black Metal brewed using the brewery’s house mixed culture of microorganisms consisting of brewers yeast and native yeast and bacteria harvested from the air and wildflowers around the brewery. The previous batches of Farmhouse Black Metal was brewed using a French Saison yeast.

Capped 750 from Tavour. Pours dark brown/black with a huge creamy/foamy dark tan head. Aroma of chocolate and dark malts. Full bodied or nearly. Flavor is really dark and earthy chocolate, with something that could be called a hint at sour. Certainly there’s very little sweetness here. Earthy chocolate bitter finish.

Small. Pour at Beercraft. Dark brown with small fading beige head. Aroma is raisins and currants, kind of sweet. Taste brings the yeast forward, not tart, but tangy. Still sweet, and bitter finish clings to the palate. Sweet, funky, tart. Interesting.

Black. Some yeast in the aroma. Drh and ashy. Some earth. This is not very good.

Bottle shared by Tom, thanks! Pours black with an earthy dark brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has dark grains with some wet hay and a bit of funk underlying. Flavor has ashy dark grains with strong bitter roasted malts and a hint of dark fruits.

On cask at The Hay Merchant. Pours black with small beige head that lasts. The aroma is strong roast, cocoa, cherry skin, lacto, wood. Thick mouth, cherry, wood, vanilla, roast, boozy finish, very good.

Draft sample @ Oersoep Bierfest 2015, Nijmegen.

Sampled draft @ Oersoep Craft Beer Festival 2015. Lighter black, solid mocha head. Nose is surprisingly sour, going to vinegar with grainy mocha, charred malts, puckering. Taste is puckering sour, grainy barrel, malts, roasted coffee dark fruit but all of it is in the back, sourness upfront,… Thick works amazing well. Way, way better than the previous farmhouse version, no odd mix of funk & RIS, this is a full-bodied sour, all the way. Puckering, thinned solid body. Unique, fascinating, awesome. Best version if any comparison is possible between the first & current version.
