Bottle (2012/BR.2) @ home from an IP trade with richiesd some years ago, maasive thanks! Pours a black colour. Head is light brown and quite dense with still pretty good retention. Aroma's: sweet, bourbon, vanilla, honey, wood. Retronasal: sweet, roasty, light umami, dried fruit, chocolate, light boozy. Flavour is sweet, honey, fudge, milk chocolate. Medium bodied. Alcohol feel is moderate but warming. Light roasty and woody bitterness in the finish. Sweet but well balanced. Lovely stuff!

2016 vintage bottle at CBF Wien 11/2018.
Black, oily body, with a small, creamy, coffee-colored head.
Aroma of bourbon, wood, coconut, dark chocolate, vanilla, tobacco, soy sauce, cocoa, some molasses.
Tastes creamy, quite similar, while with more dark chocolate, more coconut, slight booze.
Full, oily mouthfeel, with a moderate carbonation.
Finishes warm, slightly boozy, wooden, a bit sweet, with bourbon, tobacco, cocoa powder, dark chocolate, some soy sauce.
Tasty. Intense, but smooth at the same time, with a well dosed booze from the bourbon barrel. Nice creamy, chocolatey character to it. Not an outstanding style example maybe, but still a lovely sipper.

One of the countless iterations of this pricey brand of Californian imperial stouts, I rarely buy bottles of these, but not having had one for a few years, it was hard to resist when I saw it standing on a shelf at De Caigny north of Antwerp. The 2015 vintage of the purple wax variant, meaning aged on Elijah Craig bourbon barrels. Moussy, medium thick, pale yellowish beige, lightly lacing head on top of a black beer with hazy burgundy edges – the classic look. Intense, alluring nose of molten caramel candy and caramel liqueur, soy sauce, tawny port, hot chocolate sauce, old madera, honey, coffee cream, cappuccino, dried figs, vanilla, wet oak wood, teriyaki, bourbon, Belgian chocolates, dusty old shelves, green beans, raisins soaked in brown rum. Sweet, pretty intense flavour, brown sugariness and rasins, candied figs, but countered by a light sourish undercurrent and – much more prominently – a beefy, gravy-ish umami flavour (the teriyaki aspect from the nose); softly carbonated with a thick, creamy, oily mouthfeel, but not to the extent that it impairs drinkability. Nevertheless a syrupy, viscous black chocolate-, pecan nut- and caramel candy-like maltiness dominates the middle, developing a soft coffeeish roastiness in the end but still remaining primarily sweet. Honey provides retronasal aromas which accentuate the sweetness, but the woody tannins, including quite expressive vanilla-ish ‘oakiness’, do a good job at balancing this. The booze in this case has a madera- and port-like ‘nobility’ to it, apart from the evident bourbon flavour. Another beautiful Eclipse, even if the umami could have been a bit less and the roasted bitterness a bit more for me personally – but in all respects a high class ‘bière de dégustation’ and one to be taken with consideration and contemplation. I need to buy this series more often – if only they weren’t so damn expensive here…

Bottle 2018 Imperisl Stout share. Hard to judge a good pour when you've had so many. Roasty , boozy aroma. Taste follows with more warm bourbon notes, slick stout flavors underneath. Solid BBA RIS.
