This is a BIG beer. We basically took the Hoppy Feet recipe and multiplied everything by 1.5. This created a wonderfully unique beer that has a deeper malt balance, bolder hop profile, and an extremely fresh aroma. When comparing to regular Hoppy Feet you will notice much sweeter malt notes mixed in with a more pronounced chocolate and dark fruit flavor. The malt flavors are balanced off with strong pine and citrus notes from the addition of A LOT of hops. This beer was actually dry-hopped not once but TWICE with each of the hop varieties (Columbus, Cascade, and Amarillo).

Bomber from Liz. Pours very dark brown with a creamy/foamy tan head. Aromas of chocolate over pine. Med+ body. Flavor is chocolate, dark malt and a heck of a lot of mixed citrus/pine. Wowser. It is a bit malty, but it’s very bitter and flavorful. Mild hop burn. Very nice.

22 oz. bomber from Binny’s, April 2011. Unless I missed in my check, this is currently the strongest Black IPA made, no? Unless there are beers filed under Double IPA. This does smell of warming alcohol, unfortunately not enough to break up the stuffy nose I’ve got. Solid black body, slightly foamy stout-colored head. I let my regular Hoppy Feet sit too long, but let’s see what a year does to this one: Taste is in the Impy stout territory, still a lot of roastiness in the malts, which I’d hoped would smooth a little bit by now. Still a lot of piney hop resin banging away on my taste buds. Roastiness does dwindle away once the stuff coats my innards, making it a roughhouse of a beer, but a welcome nightcap.

Bottle (mine labeled at 10% ABV). Pours with a near black body with a large, fluffy brown head. Aromas are of perfume, sweet, brown sugar, canned pineapple, earthy with some fudge. Flavors are bitter, nutty, fudge. Astringently bitter (from the roast) and decently bitter from the hops. Bready, medium sweet. A bit messy. Lively carbonation, medium bubbles, lasting astringency.

Courtesy of ksurkin. Bomber pours dark dark mahogany with tan head and a bit of lacing left behind on the glass. The modest aroma offers up a mix of orange juice, grapefruit and bitter pine hoppiness as well as roasty malts, burnt malts and a sort of earthy chocolate. The taste is expectedly bold on all fronts with vibrant bitter pine hops rolling into some grapefruit and tangelo. Then it seems big roasted to chocolate to burnt malts dominate with the hoppy notes just hanging around the edges. Good drinkin’ bold brew where I get almost no sense of the big ABV.

Pine needle, charred oak, peanut hulls, and freshly cut oak aroma, rustic and woody. Dark mahogany, medium beige head, uniform glass coating. Flavor is as much split wood as anything but charred oak, chocolate, and licorice notes come and go and are more prominent upon warming. There is a consistent yet vague bitterness from start to finish. This bitterness is a little too much, but that’s my sole nit pick. My guess is that it comes more from the black malt than any hopping. Stone Sublimely is still the undisputed champion but I really like this. This is a session beer for imperial stout fans. Greg, keep these fine beers coming.

On tap at Queen Vic. Pours a dark brown with a medium beige head leaving good sticky lacing along the glass. The aroma is a Floral hop and roast. Thin mouthfeel with a rich malt and strong hop bite and nice lingering bitter finish. Hides the alcohol very well, a very good black IPA from Clown Shoes.

Sampled from a 22 oz brown bottle this beer poured a black color with a very small brown head that faded quickly and left a bit of lacing. The aroma was charcoal, smoke, roasty malts, bitter floral hops and a touch of perfume. The flavor was dryish, moderately roasty and had notes of chocolate, smoke and vanilla. Very bitter fruity and floral hops and light coffee followed. The finish was long, dryish, roasty, smoky and hoppy. Medium body. Interesting.

Pours dark brown/black color with light brown head. Aromas of roasted malts with lots of pine and citrus. Citrus and pine flavors up front with moderately sweet roasted malt finish. Medium body with average carbonation and a sticky mouthfeel. Their best brew I’ve had by a long shot. Excellent!

Served on draft at Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA. Pours a dark brown color with a large creamy brown head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of citrus hops, roasted malts and chocolate. The taste is bitter citrus hops with a roasty finish. Medium bodied.
