Black ale with aromas and flavours of vanilla, dark chocolate, bourbon and roasted malt. The vanilla and cocoa marry nicely, without out-competing each other, to produce a surprisingly well balanced beer. This beer is mildly hoppy, but the cocoa introduces a touch of bitterness. Its colour may be intimidating, but it is a very smooth beer within reach of most beer drinkers. This highly appreciated dessert beer is brewed with organic fair-trade cocoa and first rate vanilla beans.

341 ml bottle. Pours a pitch black with a small creamy light brown head. Sweet aroma of roasted malt, chocolate and vanilla. Smooth chocolate and vanilla flavour with a dry, malty, bitter finish. Medium body, a creamy, oily texture with soft carbonation. Very nice.

[Thanks to Glouglouburp]. Dark brown colour, almost black with a minimal and quickly diminishing off-white head. Aroma has notes of coffee beans, dark chocolate, coconut and vanilla. Flavor is bittery with notes of coffee, coconut, slightly ashes. Dry mouthfeel in the final with a strong presence of alcohol and coffee.

341ml bottle. Pitch black colour with late awakening, small, creamy, half-way lasting, moderately lacing, tan head. Roasty dark malty aroma, hints of liquorice; while warming up hints of vanilla and cocoa make an appearance. Taste is dry, roasty dark malty, slightly metallic; vanilla and cocoa appear in the finish and carry some sweetness with them. Slightly sticky palate without oily texture. Too much vanilla for me; in general modulating the scope of the style (or pushing it to the limits) in areas (catchword: marshmallows) not prefered by me.

341 ml bottle, from a Quebecois co-worker. ABV is 6.5%. Black colour, low tan head. Strong and pleasant aroma of cocoa and vanilla. The flavour is not very sweet, but has plenty of cocoa powder and vanilla, with strong coffee and bittering hops in the finish. No aphrodisiaque effect detected - maybe I am immune?

Bottle. Pours opaque black with a medium brown head and nice lacing. Aroma is roasty, chocolate, vanilla, a bit of tobacco. Flavor much the same, light sweet and light plus bitter, roasty and rich. Medium plus body, somewhat creamy. Finish has lingering bitterness. Considering this beer is only 6.5%, it is quite impressive.

Keg at Brewdog Shepherds Bush, London. A dark brown/black coloured pour with a medium beige head on top. Sweet, malty, chocolate, vanilla aroma. Rich tasting, chocolate, vanilla, malty, sweet, thick and smooth drinking with a hint of bitterness. Very nice stout indeed.
