One of the earliest examples of Russian Imperial Stouts in the United States, Expedition Stout offers immensely complex flavors crafted specifically with aging in mind.
A huge malt body is matched with a heady blend of chocolate, dark fruit and other aromas. The flavors will slowly meld and grow in depth as the beer ages in your cellar.

2016 re-rate: 2015 bottle aged for a year. Pours a pitch black with a small rim of brown foam that lingers. Big molasses, toasted sorghum, deep cacao and light coffee on the nose. Roasty on the palate, roasted cacao nib and sorghum. Deep, roasted flavors. A little roasty bitterness on the finish. I think another year would mellow this out a bit more. Old rating. Bottle from Old Town. Dark black with slight ruby highlights and a thin brown head. Great lacing throughout. Aromas of roasted espresso, cacao nibs, blackstrap molasses, fig, and dried prune. Creamy mouthfeel with a full rich flavor. Full bodied with light carbonation. Cacao and coffee flavors are most pronounced but as it warms up to room temperature more of the dark fruit flavors become evident. Great smooth finish. World class Impy that deserves every bit of the hype that surrounds it.

12 oz bottle poured. Pours jet black with a swirling tan head. Wonderful chocolate roast aroma. Absolutely wonderful. In my opinion, this is exactly what a stout should be. Talk about a beer that is hyped, and lives up to all the hype, plus much more. Flavor is a really nice milk chocolate, with a medium roasted flavor to it as well. Doesnβt come off as boozy in any way at all. Almost a bit of vanilla that sneaks in to an otherwise chocolate filled finish. I canβt wait to give this one some age. Perhaps the best stout I have ever had, and ranks up there with the best of beers as well. Incredible stout. Absolutely love this.

Thanks to tderoeck for the bottle! Poured into a teku glass, showing pitch ink black and very little if any latte foam that fades into swirls in the glass. The nose is complex - a lot of bourbon and charred wood. Generous notes of dark chocolate and coffee beans. Also lighter hints of vanilla. The palate shows an oily, slick, impossibly smooth, and light body. The first impression shows a lot of the bourbon, and smoked wood with light hints of the dark chocolate. The mid palate matures into more of the bourbon and smokiness. The finish shows a noticeable but short sweetness akin to vanilla or a milk stout and a strong but not overwhelming espresso bitterness. This is a really tasty sipper. Very curious to see how this ages.

Bottle by Cuso, thanks! Aroma rich malty, coffee, sherry-like, raisins. Pitch colour. Taste is once again rich dark malty, chocolate, roasted, toffee, raisins, very nicely balanced. Also quite easily drinkable considering the ABV. Alcohol hidden well. Excellent.

One heck of a brew, slick and oily, black with fast disappearing beige head. Robust but mild aroma leads into sharp, crisp and deep smoky taste. Mouth feel is slick and slippery, lingering coffee bitterness/ Well worth its high ratings.
