One of the earliest examples of Russian Imperial Stouts in the United States, Expedition Stout offers immensely complex flavors crafted specifically with aging in mind.

A huge malt body is matched with a heady blend of chocolate, dark fruit and other aromas. The flavors will slowly meld and grow in depth as the beer ages in your cellar.

Bottle at tasting, thanks Jonno. Dark brown, hardly no head. Aroma is booze, fudge, bit roasty, oaty, porridge. Taste is very nice. Nice dryness, dark chocolate, wheaty, something savoury. Really nice. --- Beer merged from original tick of Expedition Stout on 09 Sep 2019 at 16:06 - Score: Appearance - 6 | Aroma - 10 | Flavor - 9 | Texture - 8 | Overall - 9. 3rd LCRBM. Licorice, apple and roast in the aroma. Sugary sweet roasted flavor with grapes. Licorice in the aftertaste. Good, but not a world classic.

Bottle from Bottle Craft in SD at home in HK. Thick slightly slick black pour with light tan head. Aroma is rich roasted coffee, dark dried fruit, leather, sharp alcohol - big Russian imperial stout. Taste is similarly huge. Sharp bitterness, earthy chocolate and coffee, sweet and tart dried fruit, leather. Lots. Delicious. Palate is rich silky smooth but not heavy. Finish very bitter and alcoholic bite. Excellent example of this style. Sort of a traditional American-style take, and very big in every way.

9/18 bottle, about 13C. Black with a tan head that gradually fades to a fat coat. Aroma of mocha, fudge, stewed blackberries, plums, some overt alcohol. Silky, enveloping. Very sweet with quite firm roasted notes and strong bitterness that lifts everything away. Thought I'd try this fresh first and that the bitterness might be too much but it works just fine for me. Huge chocolaty malt is tamed really by astringent coffee, then roast and finally bitterness. The fruity notes don't get a lot of room but are there. I don't mind the whiff of booze. Yes, great.

With Nirvana Unplugged playing in the background I take this Saturday afternoon opportunity to open my first ever Expedition. A fortunate and pleasing acquisition at the Santa Fe, NM Total Wine, I pour the initial bottle (PKG 9/10/18 it says) into my ABGB snifter. Wow, there is black and then there is black. The body is definitely black. Very little head, a medium tan what there is of it. Inviting scent, chocolate, sour dough bread, malt. Now the taste, my goodness, it is like TEN FIDY on steroids. Very dense dark chocolate, burnt oak, ash, wheat toast, roasted pecans, just a touch of caramel. It gives a slight burn along with a strong bitterness. Now all I have to do is find a Black Note.

Bottle pour into nonic pint glass from Redstone Liquors, Stoneham, bottled date 10/8/18 so very young at time of initial rating. Appearance is opaque black with dark brown at the bottom of the glass, nice sparkle at the sides of the glass, 2-finger width creamy, foam head with good retention and nice, soapy lacing. Aroma is mild roasted malt, earth, alcohol. Taste is fruit, pretty potent alcohol, roasted malt. Palate is medium bodied, creamy, smooth, velvety texture, pleasant alcohol warmth with soft carbonation and fruity, alcohol, then lightly bitter finish. Overall, it will be interesting to see how this ages. Currently the appearance and palate are great but the aroma and taste are a bit muted, alcohol is a bit harsh and overrides anything that might be subtle. Stay tuned.
