Anchor Porter became the first modern American porter style beer when it was introduced in 1972. A blend of specially roasted pale, caramel, chocolate, and black malts, along with our top-fermenting yeast, creates complexity without bitterness. The brew is hopped at a high rate, and naturally carbonated. The result is dark in the glass, but surprisingly light on the palate.

Opaque black beer with a decent beige head. It’s a typical porter but a seriously good one. Malty aroma, vanilla, chocolate and coffee. Nice bittersweet aftertaste.

From tap at the Hoppy Pub, Thessaloniki. Black color with beige head. Roasted malty aroma, bready, chocolate, light coffee, some smoked notes. Light sweet and bitter taste like aroma. Medium oily body with soft carbonation.

Bottle at the Free Press, Cambridge. Incredibly dark brown with a nice looseish tan/khaki head and generous lacing. Liquorice, coal, slate aroma: dark things. A candied sweet taste competes with fresh hop bitterness. Tastes stronger than it is, which is no bad thing. Soft but effective carbonation. A top porter.

355 ml bottle. Pours an opaque, black with an average, creamy, brown head that laces. Sweet aroma of roasted malt, dark chocolate and coffee. Sweet flavour of roasted malt, dark chocolate, coffee, liquorice and a hint of smoke in the aftertaste with a dry bitter finish. Medium body with a creamy, smooth, oily texture and soft carbonation.
