Anchor Porter became the first modern American porter style beer when it was introduced in 1972. A blend of specially roasted pale, caramel, chocolate, and black malts, along with our top-fermenting yeast, creates complexity without bitterness. The brew is hopped at a high rate, and naturally carbonated. The result is dark in the glass, but surprisingly light on the palate.

Flasche (355 ml) von Bierlieb, Berlin. - Tiefdunkles Kastanienbraun, beinahe schwarz; sahniger beigefarbener Schaum.

Bottle from Masuyo’s in 2014. Poured into a shaker pint. Deep dark brown with a long lasting beige head. Chocolate malt, coffee and prune on the nose. Tastes the same with a bit of roasted coffee and dark chocolate. Silky mouthfeel. Really well-balanced and not overly sweet. Top class porter.

Pitch black with a red copper hue, large frothy tan head, good retention, ample lacing. Sweet malty aroma, roasted, dark chocolate, coffee, bit nutty, spicy notes. Smooth taste medium sweet, good chocolate bitterness. Full body, oily to creamy texture, soft carbonation, aftertaste roasty bittersweet, chocolate, fruity and spicy notes, lingering chocolate bitterness in the finish, excellent porter.

Svart med høyt lys brunt skum. Melkesjokolade, godt moden banan og noe mørke frukter. Bittersøt smak. Brent karamell, mørk sjokolade og kaffesmak. Fyldig. Lett bitter avslutning.

Bottle from Seoul Plaza. Aroma dark roasted, chocolate, light fruity. Clear colour, very dark, moderately thick texture. Moderately stable head. Taste is very smooth and nicely balanced. Equal intensity malty sweetness, toffee, fruity flavours, and dark bitter roasted, chocolate flavours. Finishes bitter with a definite hops presence, grassy. True to style and very enjoyable beer.

Porter 5.6% this beer gave me a fantastically thick dense tan foam and a great classic looking pour worthy of a Michael Jackson book. The aroma is savoury bitter chocolate with a rich roastiness. Medium bodied with fairly smooth mouthfeel. The taste is surprisingly bitter roasted malts with a nice depth of flavor - a bit nutty, savoury bitter semi-sweet chocolate with a hefty dose of roasted barley. While it isn’t a hugely challenging porter it does have a lot more flavor than I expected.

12 oz bottle pour. Pours black with a fluffy tan head. Very rich milk chocolate aroma with some malt too. Flavor is pretty rich at first. Full of chocolate flavor with a long, roasted finish to it. This is really not what I was expecting from this, not that it’s a bad thing. I honestly have trouble really saying how I feel about this beer. It is missing something that I love about porters, but I can’t quite figure out what it is. I enjoyed this beer nonetheless. High drinkability and decent flavor. Would I put it in my top list of porters? I would not, though that is some stiff competition. I’m sure I’ll drink this again some day. Not bad.

From Jun 2007

Purchased at Liquor Shed in Casper.

This pours from 12oz bottle a very dark brown with a small tannish head of foam. It shrinks to an island in the middle and it has good lacing.

The smell has a lot of chocolate and sweet malt with just a whiff of some hoppy goodness.

The taste is very big and very nice. I get a lot of chocolate and roasted malt and some good coffee notes as well. Smooth yet full flavoured. Swishing the beer in my mouth, I get a more pronounced hop bitterness that really balances and goes well with the sweet start that I got. Man...this is a *great* Porter. The mouthfeel is elegant and the carbonation is just right and the finish has a nice bitter zing to it. I haven't bought a sixer of this in years and that makes me shake my head in disbelief.

Bottom line: This is a world class American Porter that just about anyone can find in the US. Highly recommended!!
