Anchor Porter became the first modern American porter style beer when it was introduced in 1972. A blend of specially roasted pale, caramel, chocolate, and black malts, along with our top-fermenting yeast, creates complexity without bitterness. The brew is hopped at a high rate, and naturally carbonated. The result is dark in the glass, but surprisingly light on the palate.

12 oz. bottle from Total Wine. Pours a very dark brown color with a large khaki head and excellent retention. Some nitro-like action too. Very good lacing. Roasty dark chocolate and coffee aroma. The taste follows the nose: Dark malts and bitter dark chocolate flavors with a little coffee in the background. Very clean and smooth. Medium+ body. Medium-light carbonation. Lower bitterness than the 40 IBUs would suggest. I can’t believe I've never had this before now. A really good porter. Top 50 indeed.

Junk at Beer temple Amsterdam tasted okay, but h ya r retro nasal was like old rotten paper. Try again. (3.2 aug 2022) Bottle from bierkonig. Glad i got a good bottle before it went away. Substantially better, nice crisp classical light porter. Similar to guinness west indies porter

Donkerbruin tot zwart bier met mooie lichtbruine schuimkraag. Smaak is bitter en vol romig met iets van rook, zwarte sterke koffie en bittere chocolade. Klasse!

On tap at Craft Beer Oasis, Cewe. Pours a very dark reddish-brown with a small cream head and good lacing. Chocolate and dark fruits to the fore in the aroma. In the mouth it is creamy with a real mix of flavours, liquorice, roasts malts, dark chocolate, and hints of spices. Some bitter coffee grounds come into the equation later on. Finish is bitter with a warming flow inside. This is a classic porter.
