The name refers to Count Baudouin VII of Flanders (1093-1119), nicknamed “Hapkin” or “with the ax”. 900 years ago he is said to have commissioned the monks of Ten Duinen Abbey (near Koksijde) to brew a strong blond beer that would make him and his men invincible.

I believe this 33 cl bottle came from De Bierkoning on our tour through the Netherlands and Belgium late last summer. This evening I have my globe glass in place, most used one in the small collection. The pour shows a clear, shiny gold body with a significant head of off-white foam and plenty of carbonation. The beer is strongly fragrant, I get a lot of yellow fruit, yeast, grain and a bare touch of citrus. A drink now and I have to say that this is an enjoyable brew. Dried peaches, white bread, apricots, malt, some hops bitterness and meadow. Nice.

Bottle, 330 ml at Le Bistro Porte de Hal. Cloudy golden, large white head. Malty, grainy, some floral notes, sweet and quite simple. Tad spicy.

opalescent pale golden colour, large, though not so stable white head; aroma of grainy, peachy, some citrusy, dried apricot, floral and green herbal notes; taste has the same notes as can be felt in the aroma with hoppy bitterness and spicy aftertaste; good one

Keg at the Cafe de Paris in Calais. Golden with a carbonation and a frothy head. It's a strong tasting brew but the regional styling makes this instantly a recognisable Belgian Pale with hints of banana in both aroma and taste.

Suht tavaline kange-magus-aökone belglane, veits on mõrudust ehk rohkem.

Bottle from Drinks Vanuxeem, Ploegsteert, Belgium. Pours a hazy golden colour with a large thick throthy white head. Aromas of floral, peppery spice and yellow fruits. Taste is again floral and fruity with more peppery spice on a very slightly bitter and sweet finish. Medium body, gentle carbonation and fairly smooth mouthfeel. Nice elegant tasting beer. Solid.
