Hapkin is a strong blond top-fermented beer that is refermented in the bottle. The floral touch of Saazhop and the spicy hop variety Monroe determine this rich blond beer. Originally from Louwaege Brewery (Kortemark), brewed from 2001 to 2007 at Brasserie Union (Jumet), then at Alken-Maes (Alken).

The name refers to Count Baudouin VII of Flanders (1093-1119), nicknamed “Hapkin” or “with the ax”. 900 years ago he is said to have commissioned the monks of Ten Duinen Abbey (near Koksijde) to brew a strong blond beer that would make him and his men invincible.

On tap à la Mort Subite, Brussels on 24th January 2026. Clear, active amber with frothy whitish foam and full lacing. Citrus, spices and earthy pungencies in aroma. Bitter grasses, citrus notes and spiced sweet fruits in-mouth, and a spicy bittersweet finish. Engaging mouthfeel and a fair amount of body.

Pours a slightly hazy yellow/golden with a nice big white head. Aroma of citrus, yeast, fruits, hops, some spices. The Hapkin is a rather typical Belgian strong ale, but it’s enjoyable regardless.
