4oz pour at Max’s Rare and Obscure Beer Week Part 4. Pours a watery, translucent black with a lacing, creamy, beige head. Nose has tons of coffee, coffee grounds, toasted bread, nutty, a little chocolate. Flavor is all coffee, a little brown sugar, nutty, toasted bread. The coffee flavor is nice and nutty. Full bodied, dry finish. Really solid.

On tap at Håndverkerstuene. Firm, tan coloured head to a more or less jet black body. Smell of coffee with sweet malts beneath. Roasted coffee malts in flavour and bittering malts to a lingering finish. Medium bodied. A fine after dinner drink (Oslo, 25.05.2011).

On tap @ Cardinal. Dark red body, almost black with a fine beige head. Aroma is totally dominated by coffee. There is a hint of dark malt as well, but in a blind test I would assumed this was coffee. Flavor is strong, good roasted coffee, malt, and milk chocolate with bitter hops in the aftertaste. For me this is more like cold coffee with beer than beer with coffee flavor. Not balanced at all, never had this much coffee flavor in a beer before, even compared with Beer Geek Breakfast. But I like coffee and this tastes like fine coffee to me. Extreme but enjoyable.

On tap at Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger, as HaandBryggeriet Costa Rica Porter. Black colour, low tan head. Lovely aroma of mild coffee and dark chocolate, a hint of cigarbox. Medium dry flavour with coffee, dark chocolate and a touch of tar and smoke. Another good beer from HaandBryggeriet!

Tap @ Baran Cafe, Bergen. Costa Rica has a near black body with a thin almost non-existing head. Sweet and nice aromas where I get hints of good quality coffee and weak licorice. Tastes silky smooth, slightly sweet with notes of some dark berries and coffee. Medium bodied and medium carbonated. Finishes off with a nice slightly acidic finish. Got better and better when it got some temperature, so served at the right temperature this is really nice. Want more!
