Sampled on draft at Olde New York in State College PA this beer poured a dark brown color with orange highlights and a large creamy beige head that lingered and produced some lacing. The aroma was lightly toasty and tangy with faint fruit and caramel. The flavor was tangy, bitter and bready with notes of cherry and molasses. The finish was short, tangy, bready and had a light cherry undertone. Somewhat full bodied. Decent.

Pecan and maple syrup aroma, not real strong. Clear garnet brown, medium head. Nutty pancake syrup flavor, with a malty tartness. Maple syrup is prominent in the finish. Not very intense

Bottle. Dark brown with a red tinge. Small beige head that dissipated almost immediately. Aroma was light malt and bread. Bland malty flavor with a slight metallic taste. Thin watery palate with light carbonation.

On Tap @ Munich Haus. Head pored thick and dissolved quick. Aroma smell like copper and roasted malt. Nice smooth mouth feel. Light tasting for a dunkle. I’m sure I had the better version on tap. I would buy again. Munich Haus has it on tap nearly year around.

Sample pour from bottle, Glunz Beer Expo, Chicago, April 2010. I carried this sample around while getting some food, so there are no bubbles left, but it hes left a little ring of foam. Color is dunkel dark. I wasn’t able to smell my last few samples, but this one’s dark, sugary malts are finally penetrating. Taste is the nice brown bread taste of a dark malt. Just a little bit of yeast taste. Very smooth, dark malty lager. Some honey, even a bit of molasses cookie. Goes down very smoothly, even if it is a little heavy.

My 2800th rating - because I have no other unrated beer in the house that I am not saving to share with others - also because milestones are gay - this one is not as bad as many of the ratings suggest - reminds me a bit of a lighter version of optimator - a lot of burnt sugars and toasted grains - notes of raisin and prune - a bit of leafy, tobacco-ish character - a touch starchy and metallic on the tail end, which may be contributing to the low ratings, but this flaw is actually fairly well-masked (sometimes I don’t even notice it) - I wouldn’t buy it again or anything, but it’s not terrible.

A dark reddish to brown dunkel with a thin light moka head. In aroma, a very nutty herbal aroma, with spent mash, caramel, fruity esters. In mouth, a rather weak herbal malt, with iron notes, balnd and sweetish. Tasted at CNY brewfest, Feb. 6 2010.
