This was the first beer in our Ancient Ales series.

This sweet yet dry beer is made with ingredients found in 2,700-year-old drinking vessels from the tomb of King Midas. Somewhere between beer, wine and mead, Midas will please the chardonnay and beer drinker alike.

For years, Dogfish Head has worked with biomolecular archaeologist Dr. Patrick McGovern to bring Ancient Ales to life. For more on Midas Touch and the experience of Penn Museum excavators as they uncovered the tomb of the legendary King Midas, read this essay from Dr. Pat.

Draft at Ginger Man. Poured midasy gold. Very sweet and fruity. Some yeast and such at the end. CHardonnay call was accurate.

Bottle. This is one weird beer. Not sure why it’s a traditional beer. Really sweet. The ingredients seem to clash. Nice golden color and smell. Didn’t care for the taste.

Rated April 2006. Poured light hazy copper color and near zero head. Aroma is medium in strength. Mostly I think I smell grapes then alcohol and then a hint of malt. The taste is sweet then turns sour in the finish. This isn’t my cup of tea, too sweet by about the 7th once. Interesting brew however. I probably want get it again.

Bottle from Brewers Haven. Clear, medium golden body with a small cap of foamy head. Grainy aroma, malty, reminiscent of some of the emmer or spelt beets in Germany. Taste starts out malty before turning over to some savory, herbal flavors, woody, juniper. I guess the ancient Sumerians had it pretty good...
