It’s hard being the sequel, unless you wrote the original story. Inspired by the continual hopping process we invented with 90 Minute IPA, 60 Minute builds on that one-of-a-kind process and flavor, crafting a solid gold hit that’s found its own identity.
Brewed using a boatload of intense Northwest hops, we boil this continually hopped IPA for a full 60 minutes, adding more than 60 hop additions continuously to create a bold and timeless flavor. Continually hopped to deliver a pungently, citrusy, grassy hop flavor without being crushingly bitter, 60 Minute IPA is a surprisingly sessionable IPA for the craft enthusiast.

The Greatest Invention You’ll Ever Taste
It was back in the mid-90s when we started messing around with extreme versions of super hoppy IPAs. We would use foolhardy amounts of hops, creating a really pronounced bitterness that seemed out of place.
After an ‘aha!’ moment while watching a cooking show on TV, Dogfish Head founder & CEO Sam Calagione tracked down one of those old school vibrating football games to help feed the beer a continual stream of hop pellets. Boom! Continual hopping was born!
You see, traditionally brewers make two hop additions - one big dose early in the boil for flavor, and another bunch at the end for aroma. But thanks to a rigged up football-machine-turned-continual-hopper and our addition of equal increments throughout the entire boil, Sam was able to create an outrageously hoppy IPA, without being crushingly bitter.
Now all these years later, and after much more sophisticated second, third and fourth generation contraptions have taken over our continual hopping process, the theory and execution are essentially unchanged.
In 2019 we celebrate the 20th anniversary of continual hopping and the really special experience that comes with it. Who knew that a thrift store game and a random cooking show would put us on a path to creating ‘the greatest invention you’ll ever taste.’

Keg at the hanging bat. Pours clear golden, nose is sweet toffee, pine, crystal malt, taste is dry, sweet toffee, burnt malts, light fruit.

Refrigerated 12 oz. brown bottle, bottled on June 23, 2015, poured into a glass. Clear light orange with small white head. Aroma is herbal hops, medium body, medium/light carbonation, and some lacing. Taste is herbal hops, some pine hops, and bitter finish. Famous beer, expected more.

Bottle kindly donated by Santa SlackerMads. Unclear orange golden color with thick white head. Nice citrus hoppy aroma with zest, pines, resin and caramel. Nice citrus hoppy bitter taste with grapefruit, oranges, zest, pines, resin. Solid malty base with caramel. Long citrus hoppy bitter finish. Very tasty, well balanced beer.

One of the classic American IPAs and a Dogfish Head staple. Bottle at GBBF. Cobweb lacing, snow white, thin, long lasting, off-white head over an initially hazy, deep golden coloured beer with quiet sparkling. Aroma of yellow grapefruit, lemon peel, white bread, pineapple, hints of spruce and field flowers; less aromatically hoppy than I had expected (and hoped). Crisp, clean, smooth taste, fizzy to the point of being overcarbonated for the style, bit bready with hints of apple peel, refreshing with a smooth body and some pale male sweetishness, bit grainy too; long, drying, hop bitter finish, a bit minerally and less citrussy or piney than I thought it was going to be. Perhaps I need a fresher bottle, but in this form this was a bit of a disappointment, honestly speaking.

355 ml. bottle @ home. Obtained in a trade with LouS. Thanks! Bottled on 04/15/15. Clear darker orange, a few streams of rising bubbles, small off-white head. Nose is delicious USA hops, grapefruit hops, orange peel, marmalade hops mixed with light chewy malts & touch of candy sugar. Hoppy with some malt sweetness, pleasant & accessible. Taste is bitter orange peel & floral bitterness, reasonably strong bitterness, light orange marmalade malt in the back, light grainy bread, bitter pine, lingering pine resin bitterness, grapefruit peel, floral & faint candy, faint tropical note in the back, bitter floral nature takes a bit over in the finish,… Light, higher carbonation & lightly grainy nature. Lots of bitter hops in the taste even if they seem far more mild in the nose. Comes across as a solid everyday hop forward / hop head beer.

35,5cl bottle shared by Arve_Christian - thanks a lot! Pours hazy golden with a white head. Hoppy and fruity aroma with notes of pine, citrus and herbs. Moderate to medium sweet with nice hoppy flavours and a balanced bitterness. Balanced and delicious. Not the freshest one but still excellent ale!

Gyllengul vätska med vitt skum. Doftar grape, tallbarr, kåda och en aning av anis. Bra balans mellan maltsötma och beska. Eftersmaken klingar av ganska snabbt. Helt ok.

Keg at Southern Soul BBQ, Georgia, 19/02/15. Had this one many a time just all in pre rating days! Golden orange with a big old off white head. Nose is pale malts, orange, grassy, light hop notes, tangerine. Taste comprises light grapefruit, orange pith, straw, lemon, light caramel malt notes. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, hop bitterness in the close. Drinking and rating this about 10 years on from the first time I had it, it just didn’t deliver the same hop hit and semi ’wow’ factor. I guess this one holds a high score on the site due to longevity, nothing wrong with this at all but IPA’s have moved on for me.
