Dubbed ‘The original craft beer’, this dangerously drinkable legend has been in the family since 1899, when Tom, the old brewery cat, was sketched into immortality by Robinsons’ Head Brewer as he waited for the ale to ferment. 120 years on and it’s still the same great tasting ale, brewed to the same award-winning recipe. Rich, malty and warming, Old Tom has a distinctive deep port wine finish, with bitter hops balanced by the heady aromas of dark fruit.

0.33l bottle. Dark brown/black body, thin off-white head. Aroma of dark fruits, reisin and chocolate. Lots of dark fruits and chocolate in the flavor.Noticeable alcohol presence but it’s not harsh. Awesome beer!

New Beer Distributors, NY 330ml ($4.50): Pours a amber/brown colour with a creamy head. Aroma is toffee, malt, and dark fruit. It’s kind of like a doppelbock. Body is chewie, like a wookie. Sweetness is nicely contained. It is like a mildly sweet cake. Reminds me a little of some of the Traquair beers. Pretty smooth for an old ale.

Bottle at home in London with Lyoli. Pours clear brown with a sturdy, off-white foam head. Nose is brown sugar, faintly tangy ripe fruits, toasted sugar. Medium sweet flavor with a very mellow toasted sugar character, some prunes, raisins, very mild leather and even milder dirt. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Sweet finish, not really that warm, which is impressive for the ABV. More dark fruits, semi-dark malts, some brown and demerara sugar, sun-dried fruits. Excellent beer.

Prune and toffee nose. Garnet red, medium tan head. Malty flavor, rich toffee and prune. Cherry finish. Alcohol obvious, medium body, chewy.

Bottle shared. Pours brown with an off white head. Aroma of raisins, overripe fruit, toffee and malt. Same aspects in flavour, sweet and light bitter with a strange slightly sour /dry finish. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

Brown 330ml bottle, best before Sept 2008, drank July 2007. Poured into one of my Gordon Thistle glasses. Very dark brown/red with a well formed off-white head. The head stayed throughout the drink. Aroma was sweet malts and plum bread. Tangy, malty, old Sharaz wine flavour, very different from other Barley wines I have had over the years. Complexed and interesting. A very good beer. By far the best beer I have had from the Robinson brewery.

330ml Bottle - Dark brown with red tinges and a foamy head. Vinous aroma with notes of fruitcake, malt, blackcurrant and caramel. Fruity taste with notes of dried fruit, spicy malt, blackcurrant and toffee. Quite rich and warming.

Bottle. Pours with a clear near black, dark chocolate hued body with a medium sized off-white/tan head that lasts. Aromas are of raisins, toffee, trifle, marmalade, dark fruits, raisinated currants, vinous, marmalade, medium ester, lightly bready malt profile, light coffee and molasses. Dried dates, really light leather, very light hop reminiscent quality. Flavors are of caramel/crystal malts (darker end...upward of 80L), some caramelization, toffee, light chocolate, cotton candy, raisins, alcohol, mild vinous, light leather. Dry mid palate, sweet everywhere else. Some earthy notes with really light marmalade character. Somewhat lively carbonation for an old ale, medium body, leathery finish.

Bottle 33 cl. Dark brown with a shortlived lightbrown head. Nice fruity with some caramel and alc sence. The taste is sweet with a alc/fruity end.
