Dubbed ‘The original craft beer’, this dangerously drinkable legend has been in the family since 1899, when Tom, the old brewery cat, was sketched into immortality by Robinsons’ Head Brewer as he waited for the ale to ferment. 120 years on and it’s still the same great tasting ale, brewed to the same award-winning recipe. Rich, malty and warming, Old Tom has a distinctive deep port wine finish, with bitter hops balanced by the heady aromas of dark fruit.

33 cl bottle @ home, BBE 11/2012
Aroma of ozone, metal and some chocolate with roastiness. Flavour is sweet with caramel, toffee and stinging, sinol-like alcohol. Not good, the alcohol comes too much through – and gets even stronger when this warms up.

Bottle. This is a very vinous, yet elegant brew. Very much barley wine-like. Notes of dried fruits and butter, with a small earthiness added.

33 cl bottle from Systembolaget. Dark brown liquid with a mahogany tinge and medium to big, thick, off-white head. Aroma of dark fruits, caramel, molasses, raw sugar, alcohol and biscuity malt. A bit solventy. Taste is malty, peppery, biscuity, light to medium sweet and light to medium bitter. A bit tart/sour, which makes it taste a bit like cheap red wine. Full bodied with low to medium carbonation. Quite boozy. Hmm, not a favourite of mine. Too boozy and vinous.

Bottle, 14C. Very lovely dark ruby with a lacy pale beige head. Aroma of figs, raisins, dates, prunes, toffee. Oily verging on syrupy. Taste is very sweet with some roasted notes amongst layers of dark fruits. More PX sherry notes than port. Dries out at the end with some fruitcake spices and white pepper. After a few sips, bitterness emerges and really grows in the spices. Looks and smells very fine, but a little wearing - feels a little dull and is very boozy.
