Dubbed ‘The original craft beer’, this dangerously drinkable legend has been in the family since 1899, when Tom, the old brewery cat, was sketched into immortality by Robinsons’ Head Brewer as he waited for the ale to ferment. 120 years on and it’s still the same great tasting ale, brewed to the same award-winning recipe. Rich, malty and warming, Old Tom has a distinctive deep port wine finish, with bitter hops balanced by the heady aromas of dark fruit.

Bottle, gift from somewhere. Dark chocolate brown with a bit of khaki head. Simple aroma of chocolate malt with a hint of sarsaparilla. Taste is sweet and malty like an alcoholic Milo. A hint of bitter hop surfaces at the end. Good balance on the finish. Not a particularly exciting beer, and like the cask version I was expecting a bit more at 8.5%.

Pours a dark ruby color with a off white head that fades to bites of lacing. Taste of malt, caramel, trace of chocolate and spices. Mild bitterness and quite clean with a bit of lingering spice. Moderate body, smooth with a unique rich flavor that is enhanced as it warms.

Stunned to find this is unrated. Nose is very malty, slight licorice, very nutty, light dark fruits. Taste is malty, very fruity with plums, berry, raisins, leading to a touch of chocolate. Mouthfeel a touch thin. I don’t know if I’ve changed or the beer has, but it’s not really the Old Tom of my youth, I need to have it again on draft. It’s a decent old ale, nothing more. NB They need to knock the unattributed to ’World Best Beer’ thing on the head.

330ml bottle from Sainsburys. Pours a deep ruby, almost black with a persistent light beige head. Aroma is light liquorice and caramel, continuing to the taste with sweet molasses, raisins and chocolate malts dominating. Some strong alcohol warmth, perhaps a little too much. Still.. enjoyable.

330 mml bottle tasted on October 2013. Clear dark brown colour with a fazy beige head. Aroma of chocolate, malts and sugar. The taste is basically chocolate with malts, low bitter and medium sweet aftertaste. Carbonation is low to medium and a full body. The alcohol is well hidden with the intense chocolate. Next one please!

Oakey and a little boozy. Some caramelized malt and a bit of a basement aroma. Pours hazy mahogany without a lot of head or lacing. Some citrus peel in the flavor. Slight astringency in finish. Not super exciting. Bottle from Chevy chase.

Clear dark red brown colour, one finger creamy tan head, recedes quickly. Aroma roasty malts, dried fruits, liquorice, chocolate, brown sugar, hint of alcohol. Taste moderate sweet, moderate bitter, roasty, creamy, toffee, dark fruit. Full-bodied, creamy texture, bit peppery on the tongue, soft carbonation. Mild dry bitter finish, woody notes. A complex and well-balanced strong ale. Excellent.
