Dubbed ‘The original craft beer’, this dangerously drinkable legend has been in the family since 1899, when Tom, the old brewery cat, was sketched into immortality by Robinsons’ Head Brewer as he waited for the ale to ferment. 120 years on and it’s still the same great tasting ale, brewed to the same award-winning recipe. Rich, malty and warming, Old Tom has a distinctive deep port wine finish, with bitter hops balanced by the heady aromas of dark fruit.

Deep amber colour with a tan head. Rich sweet toffe aroma with some fruity notes. Also very dominating sweet and fruity flavour. But not massive. Quite balanced. Medium to full body and an average to soft carbonation. A little bitt higher carbonation would have helped.

11.2oz bottle (label claiming “The World’s Best Ale”) pours with a deep amber body that supports a tan head. The aroma offers up brown sugar, plums, chocolate and then a sugary load of dates rimmed with booze. The taste begins with caramel malts, a touch of roasted malts and then a sweet mix of plums and raisins. It quickly picks up brown sugar and a thin ribbon of dates to midway and then into the finish a chocolate note rises up and then lingers well into the after taste. Pretty nice but firmly ‘old school’ as it is boozy for the abv and a touch rough around the edges. Old school is good though for an Old Ale style. Well done.
