Dubbed ‘The original craft beer’, this dangerously drinkable legend has been in the family since 1899, when Tom, the old brewery cat, was sketched into immortality by Robinsons’ Head Brewer as he waited for the ale to ferment. 120 years on and it’s still the same great tasting ale, brewed to the same award-winning recipe. Rich, malty and warming, Old Tom has a distinctive deep port wine finish, with bitter hops balanced by the heady aromas of dark fruit.

Aroma is intense roasted malt, toffee, chocolate. Appearance: dark brown with light tan head that dissapears quickly. Taste: strong flavor of caramel, dark chocolate bitterness, some sweetness, hints of spices. Nice bitterness in the aftertaste. Medium carbonation. Overall: really nice beer.

Bottle from Sainsbury’s. It pours darkest ruby with a medium beige head. The nose is roasted malt, toast, spice, charred wood, cocoa, dark fruit and jammy berry. The taste is toasty, dark fruit, berry, vinous, wood, earth, light bitterness, chewy malt, spice, cocoa, varnish and some alcohol with a dry finish. Medium+ body and fine carbonation. Interesting, flavoursome and good depth. A classic.

Bottle from Booths. Clear ruby body with a beige head. Steady carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of woody malt, the free, prunes, furniture polish and golden syrup. Flavour of bitter hops, toffee apple, nuts and soy sauce. Medium body with a smooth texture. Soft fizz. Rich and savoury. It’s decent but I tried it immediately after J W Lees’ Moonraker and, for me, it’s not in the same league.

Bottle from Asda. Clear, dark reddy brown. Thin, light tan head. Aroma is dark, dried vinous fruit. Dark sugar, dark malt. Some hop character. Taste is dry and boozy. Some residual, fruity sweetness. Short, dry finish.

dark brown colour with reddish notes, moderate creamy light brownish head; aroma of green apple with maybe some cinnamon, caramel, maybe some roastedness and oak barrel; taste of fruits, caramel, honey, and of course hoppy bitterness with alcoholic warmth and hints of smoked woods and peat; well ballanced ale; really good one, but, at least for me, definitely not the best ale in the World :-)

Bottle. Pours cloudy brown with airy light tan head. Dark aroma of caramel malt and fruit with a subtle note of dust. Sweetish flavour of malt and caramel with notes of fruit and a roasty hint. Sweetish aftertaste with a subtle sourish note. Warming alcohol presence. Very nice.

Bottle. Licorice choc aroma. Dark brown, low brown head. Light body, light salmiac retronasal. Dangerous, in a blind test I would not have guessed it is that strong.
