12 ounce bottle at the Relentless Thirst Gathering in Richmond, VA, 8.29.09. Pours a clear amber color with a thin head. Fair head retention and lacing. Big hoppy Simcoe aroma with bitter earthy and herbal notes. Taste is citrus and earthy hops with honey and sweet malts. Medium bodied.

Tap at Ashley’s. Poured a clear amber with and off-white head. Aroma of Simcoe hops with a sappy undertone. Flavor is hoppy but lacks bitterness. Doesn’t taste like a 10% ABV beer.

Orangey-amber colour. Smooth, silly nose with mandarin and peach. Sweet, yeah with the peaches and oranges. Ephemeral malt balance, shocking considering the size of this brew. Beauty hoppiness.

A hazy golden ale with a thin creamy white head. Aroma is bizarre, with rotted ginger and notes of cinnamon. In mouth, a lightly sourish banana with notes of coriander, oranges, and warmth of alcohol. The bottle is past its prime. not overly bad but not good either.

Slightly hazy copper body, dissipating carbonation at the surface creating no head. Butterscotchy caramel aroma with notes of toffee and earthy hops. Layered, complex body with a sweet fruity kick, opening with caramels and butterscotch, followed by hints of peach and apricot and caramel apples. Earthy, bitter finish. At least one fruit fly landed in my beer which is never a bad thing when it comes to a rating. That said, this had a rather harsh mouthfeel for the listed 8.5% ABV; my observation is that Kuhnhenn needs to work on the mouthfeel of their bottled beers, as all tend to be too sharp. Unhewn but complex, and worth a try.

Bottled. An unclear amber beer with a lazing beige head. The aroma has strong notes of brettanomyces combined with medium notes of caramel - is this supposed to be so? The flavor is sweet and acidic with notes of brettanomyces and fruit, leading to a dry, tart, and brett’y finish.

[Hand bottle from growler by Clark VV on March 25th, leaked on the way to Jacob Lövenlund, sampled April 7th] A hazy orange beer with no head, but it gave a small pfizt when we opened it - so it wasn’t all dead. The aroma is sweet hoppy with hints of alcohol. The flavor contains notes of grass, prunes, and spices where especially ginger stands out - it is a little too spicy for me. Has it turned bad on the journey? [7/2/5/4/12=3.0]

2004 batch on draught at the Michigan brewers fest. Pours a soft hazy orange/peach, lightly effervescent with a large amount of foamy white head. Aroma has peaches, apricots, light touches of honey, soft bananas and doughy yeastiness. Ever so slight hint of citrus and hops. Flavor is quite sweet and bursting with fruit, yeast and more fruit. Doughy sweet malt, candi sugar and a pleasingly bitter hops finish (only slightly apparent). The body really delivers the knock out blow though. It’s got a not too full, but full body, soft and velvety at first, it gains a spritzy feel towards the end and mixed with the simcoe hops, it adds just the right amount of balance on the end. Incredibly drinkable, no hints anywhere of the high alcohol content and no wateriness whatsoever. Possibly the best at the Fest and my favorite for sure.
