Farmstead® Ale with Spring Blossoms Aged in Oak Barrels

Vera Mae was our grandfather’s eldest sister; Hill Farmstead Brewery rests upon the land that was once home to her and her 13 siblings. In her honor, this Farmstead® ale is crafted from Vermont organic spelt, American hops, Vermont wildflower honey, dandelion flowers from our fields, our farmhouse yeast and water from our well. Aged in French oak wine barrels and bottled conditioned, the result is an elegant, luminescent representation of spring in Vermont: lightly tart, bright, effervescent and delicate—passing quickly while leaving just the slightest, most pleasing memory of sunshine, warmth and the promise of more.

Vera Mae pre-2016 was aged in stainless and/or puncheon, which changed to wine barrels from 2016 onwards.

Bottle shared. Pours cloudy yellow with a white head. Aroma has nice HF funk upfront, with honey, citrus, floral notes, vinous aspects and light tart fruits. Flavour is light moderate sweet and moderate acidic. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.

At WTWBA. Hazy golden orange pour soapy head. Nose is greens and citrus. Tastes of apricots, grassy, lemon and the dandelions at bitter green note. Didn’t notice any honey. Medium bodied.

750 ml bottle with a bottling date of 7 /2014. Aroma is mild crushed dandelion, yeast and very mild citrus hints.

I have never had dandelion tea before and this is a very interesting and innovative brew. Flavor shows a good lasting honey through the sip with a light tone of floral hints and very mild tartness. The tartness is subdued by the honey. Sweet for sure but not overly so, real nice balance between the ingredients. The mouthfeel is lighter with a drying texture over the tongue. I love how balanced the flavor is, never thought I would drink a beer made with dandelions in it. Very nice with a high level of drinkability.

Yellow color with a good sized white head and lacing foam. Earthy, brett aroma. Dry flavor with more yeast, as well as flowers and leaves. I got the dandelion but not the honey. Dry, lightly spiced finish.

Bottle received in trade. Thank you! Pours hazy vibrant yellow with a rather small frothy white head that leaves lots of sticky and spotty trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is funky, fruity and funky with crackers, lemon juice, dandelion stems, honey, pineapple, mango, barnyard, moist hay, dry soil, grape skins and lemon zest. Taste is tiny sour, slightly fruity and slightly floral with crackers, lemon juice, dandelions, moist grass, barnyard, dry soil, minerals and lemon zest. Mouthfeel is dry, tart, tiny astringent and light bodied. Finish is tiny sour, slightly fruity and slightly floral with crackers, lemon juice, pineapple, dandelions, moist grass, dry soil, lemon zest and hints of minerals and tonic water. Heavy on the dandelions. Almost quinine-like astringent bitterness. Acquired taste but I like it alot!

Tasting at Matt’s
Hazy blond color, with green hue, and generous head. Strong spicy aroma, with good character, and also a touch of hazelnut. Highly carbonated; very dry; also fairly acidic, lemony, tart, moderately astringent, close to some mellow Lambic.
Excellent, very well brewed; the more I drink of it, the more I like it.

Bottle sample at a tasting at the Beer & Beyond shop. Thanks Alexey. Cloudy yellow with a big white head. Lovely funky aroma full of fruits, some flowers and sweaty notes. Funky flavor, sourish, fruity and floral with a slightly bitter finish. Medium-bodied, lively carbonation. Great.
