Whoa, the scotch is heavy in this one. Huge aromas of scotch. Loads of Sweet peat, smoke and dark, charred roasty malts. The body and mouth feel are oily, and slick. The finish is medium bitter with some big smoky scotch flavours. I’m quite surprised how much of the whisky this barrel gave off to the beer. Huge woody, peaty, smoky notes. Quite nice if you enjoy some scotch.

330ml bottle [11.0% abv]. Jet black colour with average to huge, thick, frothy to creamy, moderately lasting and lacing, beige to tan head. Rather weak, chocolately and slightly caramel malty aroma, light BA overtones, notes of chocolate, some treacle, toffee, vanilla, caramel, a touch of leather. Taste is sweet-ish, chocolately and caramel malty, minimally peaty BA overtones with a touch of leather, some peppery yeasty spiciness. Oily texture, smooth and soft, minimally cloying palate, fine and soft carbonation.

330ml bottle from Brewery Creek. Bottled in March 2015. Pours an oily black with a dirt dark beige head. Aroma is very pity with some sweetness. Taste is similar with moderate sweetness and some grassy notes. Good stuff for the people who like Islay Whiskey.

One of several whisky barrel aged Meneer De Uil impies, this time on Ledaig barrels, a strongly peated whisky from the island of Mull. Bottle of about 14 months old. Pale but deeply beige, moussy, creamy head leaving some lacing and retaining well on the edge, jet black robe with ochre edges but this latter feature becomes only visible under bright light. Strong aroma indeed holds a lot of sharp and pungent peat, in the iodine-like way, along with fresh paint-like solvents and also the whisky alcohol itself, both (but mostly the first one) largely covering other aspects of warm chocolate sauce and Belgian chocolates, espresso, liquorish, teriyaki, wet leather, strong wet wood including some faint vanilla-like oak, candied dates, fudge, dried mushroom, beef stock. Intense onset combining a condense candied, slightly syrupy sweetness with a deep, soft elderberry sourishness and outspoken, but not overly dominating cured meat-like umami; soft carbo just right for the style, very thick, fat and oily mouthfeel coming from thick layers of rich caramelly, nutty and deeply chocolatey maltiness, sweet turning into bitter especially when in the end, a roasted coffeeish bitterness comes in, though it is still the caramel and chocolate sweetness which keep prevailing; finish is thick chocolate and roasted maltiness surrounded by strongly drying, ’noble’ woodiness, a peppery hop bitter accent and, unsurprisingly, a lot of booze, in the form of whisky-like alcohol heat, becoming a bit wry on the root of the tongue in the end; all the while, and especially retronasally in the end, a sharp peat flavor keeps hanging around - I am even left with a peat flavor in my mouth after swallowing (combined with the chocolatey and sugary sweetness which even cloy a little bit), yet it somehow remains more or less under control in comparison with many other peated beers I’ve encountered in recent years. I am not the biggest fan of these peat beers but this one passes since it maintains a big (but to my taste, still insufficient) part of its basic character; I do, however, find this edition too boozy, the alcohol is way too apparent in both nose and mouth. Not the easiest one to pour down, an intense beer like some of the other heavy Uiltjes, perhaps just a bit over the top to my personal taste, but surely this is an interesting one to cellar for several more years. One to defy - and sip slowly.

2016-06-30, bottle from Brewery Creek, Vancouver, 8-4-7-3-15=37
Nice saline/iodine aroma. The mouthfeel is very smooth, there is a good amount of peat, iodine; but also too much liquorice, and overall this is a decent beer but that doesn’t have depth, not as the best Imperial Stouts, but still good.

2016-03-02, tasting at Matt’s, 8-4-8-4-16=40
Pitch black color, the head dissipates quickly. Huge peaty aroma, iodine. Strong body, it has a good chocolate flavor, moderate sweetness, a fair amount of liquorice, peaty, a bit salty, with some dark malt sourness. A bit boozy in the final.
Excellent.
