SNAB finds the inspiration for Maelstrøm in the Barley Wines of the American west coast. Brewed on the occasion of 10 years of SNAB and now a classic. Malty and alcohol warming while Oregon yeast and hops from the Yakima Valley in Washington provide a lively citrus-fruity character, further emphasized by the use of dry hopping. Discover and enjoy the strong, intensely rich stirring and complex pallet of Maelstrøm: "The Big Sipper" among the SNAB beers.

A reddish brown beer with a medium and beige head. The nose is strongly caramelly malty, lots of balancing piney hops, dark fruits. Great, US-style aroma. Caramelly malts and piney hoppyness dominates the taste, some fruits. Not too sweet, surprisingly evem a quite dry. Quite simple taste but that’s working. Full bodied, low carbonation, slippery to drink. Positive, US-style barley wine with strong hoppyness, simple but balanced.

Nose is lovely. Brown sugar, toffee, apples, slight brandy, undercut with a touch of bread. Taste leads with a lot of hops befitting an American style barley wine; good herbal tones, with spice and pepper leading to a moderate resin which drops away into brown sugar, grape, a touch of cola and toffee in the finish. Mouthfeel is slick. A very nice barley wine which delivers on the premise.

Bottle at the De Molen July 2nd Tuesday tasting. Poured a clear chesnut brown with a frothy white head. The aroma is rich yeast malt and alcohol. The flavour is medium to strong bitter with yeast and lots of liquorice on the palate and well into the finish. A heart warming barley wine.

33 cl bottle @ home. Rated on 06.11.2010
Aroma is barley wine ‐like with ripe fruits, caramel, some hops and hints of alcohol. Flavour feels like a strong ale with toffee, some fruitiness, caramel malt and slight boozy feeling. Not your typical BW.
