Ola Dubh, meaning ‘Black Oil’ in Gaelic, is craftily created by taking our Old Engine Oil and maturing it in 16 year old Highland Park whisky casks. The process is far from simple, but the result is a beautiful brew with complimentary whisky notes and caramel shining through. All thanks to the labour of love of our master brewers.
Hops: East Kent Goldings, Fuggles, Galena
Malts: Lager Malt, Pinhead Oats, Roast Barley
Ola Dubh 16yr tasting notes: On the nose, Ola Dubh 16 has aromas of whisky and sweet roasted malt. The whisky forward flavour is rich with coffee, chocolate and caramel notes all shining through. This ale strikes a sensational balance of fruity sweetness with a complex bitter hop background.

Black color with nice tan head. Slightly peaty aroma, wood, some prunes. Taste is malty, dark fruits, slightly peaty, low but present carbonation. Superbly balanced, so good. Way better than the 12yo.

Bottle. Pours opaque black, small tan head, decent lacing. Aroma is peaty, smoky, roasty, cocoa, molasses. Flavor is light plus sweet, light bitter, less peaty than most in the series actually. Medium body.

Bottle @ Fermentoren, Århus. Pours pitch black with a small tan head, some lacings. Aroma of roasted malt, caramel, little peat, oak, light whisky, light hints of oxydation, some dark fruits. Flavor is light sweet, rich malty, caramel, dark chocolate, oak, whisky, dark fruit, little peat, light alcohol. Medium body, very soft carbonated, light warming alcohol in the finish. 270215

Bottle. Black with creamy beige head. Coffee, dark chocolate, hay, marzipan, fresh baked brown bread, raw green beans, light smoke, whisky, very dry ashy touch. Quite sweet but towards the finish more dry with a bitter kick. Medium bodied with initial velvety feel that ends way more dry. Very nice.

@Nuchtere Noorden Tasting I, fles meegebracht door @MaartenRF10, thanks, fles uit 2009, heeft dus even liggen rijpen. schenkt zwart met bruine kraag, Aroma van zoetigheid, volle chocolade, hout, whisky. heerlijk. smaken zijn enorm vol/glad/romig, matig zoet, licht bittertje, gelagerd op 16 jaar oude whisky aldus de fles, en de whisky smaak komt heerlijk en subtiel terug, verder wat plakkerig zoet en verder heerlijk gebalanceerd. afdronk is zoetig, Héérlijk spul dit !!! --- Beer merged from original tick of Ola Dubh 16 Year Special Reserve on 18 May 2018 at 09:27 - Score: 9

330ml bottle @ the Tenth Shrewsbury Bottle Share, courtesy of Simon. Pours nice and dark. Peated / chocolate cake aroma. Hugely complex taste, enveloping and captivating with a swirl of whisky hints drawing you in with a nutty warmth. Very impressed with this. Thanks Si!

330ml bottle: 03442 April 2013. Broached between 5 on 8th Dec 2014, cheers Simon for bringing this to the Shrewsbury Bottle Share meeting. Dark and inviting look, but who wants to stare at a beer like this? The aroma draws you in, a huge peat bog of a smell, with a whisky hint in amongst the roasted malty esters of chocolate, liquorice and dark fruits. Taste starts fairly sweet and then a mini-sourness arrives to calm down the sweetness, a wine like depth to the flavouring gives a warm feeling in the mouth and stomach: just a great beer really.
