Koff Porter is a top fermented dark, almost black, unfiltered beer, with a malty roasted aroma. Four different malts are used for this brew: Pilsner, Münchener, coloured and brown malt. These make up the beer’s characteristic aromas: roastedness, chocolate, coffee and liquorice. Koff Porter is generously hopped with Saazer and bittering hops.

One of a small league of archetypical, historically important Baltic porters, with thin but stable, deep beige head and totally jet black colour through which no light whatsoever can penetrate. Dry and assertive aroma of coffee powder, leather, nutmeg, dried banana, caramel and bitter chocolate. Strong and deep dark malts in the mouth, lots of roasted bitterness, oily texture, some cocoa but coffee-like taste predominates, vague candied fruit sweetishness, hoppy finish. Powerful beer with loads of personality.

Purchased at Binny’s in Chicago, IL; enjoyed after my first visit to the nordic countries. I couldn’t find this Finnish brew when I was in Sweden, but sure enough they have it in Chicago, hence I bought it. Appearance is a thick pitch black with a light tan head that quickly dissipates. Aroma of chocolate malt, light molasses, light cough syrup. Taste goes down with a syrupy chocolate flavor, light burn, light hop profile, overall a decent baltic porter. There was dust on the bottle, therefore I’m concerned it’s not as fresh, but it’s still pretty good.

At a tasting, many thanks rosenbergh, stable long lasting creamy deepish mocha head, opaque black colour, aroma of vanila, light roastiness, dark bread and some mushrooms, flavour of dirt, chocolate cake, bitter choclate, some cocoa and just a hint of carob, medium mellow bitterness. Nice and solid, highly enjoyable.

BOTTLE 33CL from rosenbergh. Thanks, Jan!
Look: virtually black with red highlights and a decent espresso head.
Aroma: black malts, chocolate, dark caramel, some dried fruit as it warms up. Medium intensity.
Taste: quite sweet, light roast, balanced by solid hop bitterness, dried fruit, charry finish.
Decent, but not very intense.
