White Pony’s ’golden ale’ but correctly classified here as a Belgian ale, because that’s what it is (a Belgian blonde, actually). Light gushing upon opening. Yellowish white, creamy, dense head still breaking open in a few minutes, but retaining well around the edges and leaving light lacing. Colour is a misty orange blonde with a ’fog’ of yeast floating in the heart of it; after adding the deposit, I get a muddy, soupy brownish orange. Very estery and very ’Belgian’ aroma of overripe cantaloupe and peach, a ton of sweet honey, persimmon, bubblegum, caramel syrup (prominently so), banana, strawberry ice cream, liquorice, orange candy, apple cake, burning hay, lots of spicy phenols (very suggestive, ethereal impressions of cloves, vanilla and mint; in warming up, a medicinal ’band aid’ odour joins this array of ethereal spices), dried ginger, roses and fried egg but nothing disturbing. Sweet, even somewhat sugary onset, fortunately not cloying too much and countered by a ’deep’, dull and basic sourishness which will persist till the end without giving the impression of any infection; canned apricot, strawberry, melon and orange sweetness, with medium carbonation and lean and smooth body, yeasty spiciness clearly there and even tingling a bit here and there, dryish in the finish but still with lingering sugars, honeyish and very caramelly malt base, toasted accent in the end, leading towards a phenolicly spicy finish with long-lasting caramelly and honeyish malt sweetness as well as a faint impression of earthy hop bitterness. After adding the deposit, the unmistakable yeast ’powderiness’ is there as well. Clearly a malt-forward thirst quencher, another Italian micro brew with entirely Belgian profile. The sweetness is a bit too much and the hop bitterness is clearly too low - the latter resulting in a finish with rather ’watery’ texture, fading away all too quickly and not leaving a lasting impression; the remaining mouthfeel is a bit resiny and sticky, but obviously more so from residual sugars than from hops. Not completely unpleasant in general, but a bit bland and too much aimed at the masses, who have gotten used to overly sweet blondes throughout the years. Fermentation has not worked out well either, this beer looks too ’soupy’ and spreads too many phenols around, so with some technical improvement, a more generous hop dosis and less of the boring candi syrup sweetness, this could already become a lot better.
