Maybe you’ve seen him. Maybe you’ve only heard about him. He’s tricky like that, dear old Crunkle Sam. But a good time seems to follow him wherever it goes, also a bad ass bald eagle.

Crunkle Sam is our American Barleywine that we revisit every so often. This year we chose to bring it back, bourbon barrel-aged and in a big, beautiful 19.2oz can. The legend continues…

Thick butter-coloured head, fast receding over hazy red-amber beer. Rich malts, cakey, under fragrant, sweet-fruity (muscat grapes) hops. Alcohol and fusels apparent, musk. Bitter flavour, hoppy, but with again a strong malt undercurrent, suggesting sweetness and even syrup, without really surfacing. Quinine-like bitterness, fruit as passion fruit and melon, but bitter. Vinous, especially warming up. Rich, but too wry to be velvety. Well-carbonated, well-bodied. Nice BW.

22 oz. bottle stamp on neck reads 5/19/2013, just enough age. Amber color with thin head. Aroma is caramel covered dark fruits and still light hop notes. The taste shows no alcohol and really smooth. What surprises me the most is the remaining hop presence that balances the brew extremely well. The texture is dry with some light bitterness. Very nice!

Bottle bought @ bierkompass.de. Pours clear deep amber with a frothy and creamy goldenish brownish beige head that leaves some spares sticky trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is malty, fruity, tiny earthy and tiny boozy with caramel, toffee, grapefruit juice, mango, canned peaches in simple syrup, resinous wood, pine needles, moist grass, orange zest, lemon zest and hints of alcohol. Taste is sweet, bitter, malty, fruity, slightly herbal, slightly earthy, tiny floral and tiny boozy with sweet dark bread, caramel, toffee, grapefruit juice, cape gooseberries, resinous wood, moist soil, pine needles, moist grass, lemon balm, orange zest, lemon zest, alcohol and hints of cardboard. Mouthfeel is round, slightly viscous, sticky, slightly oily bitter, slightly astringent, slightly boozy and medium to full bodied. Finish is slightly sweet, bitter, malty, slightly fruity and slightly earthy with caramel, toffee, grapefruit juice, resinous wood, pine needles, moist soil, alcohol, kumquats, lemon zest and hints of cardboard. Solid, tasty and sadly slightly cardboard oxidized US barley wine.
