Maybe you’ve seen him. Maybe you’ve only heard about him. He’s tricky like that, dear old Crunkle Sam. But a good time seems to follow him wherever it goes, also a bad ass bald eagle.
Crunkle Sam is our American Barleywine that we revisit every so often. This year we chose to bring it back, bourbon barrel-aged and in a big, beautiful 19.2oz can. The legend continues…

Bottle shared at the Midland Meet on 24th Aug 2014. Liquid and alcoholic marmalade with attitude! Poured a cloudy orange, weak beige head; heavy tropical fruit aroma, with oranges to the fore. The taste is also orange flavoured with a caramel sweetness. The alcohol is noticeable and adds a bite to the sweetness. The beer tries to have a dry finish, but fails: I liked it.

650 ml bottle. Pours a clear mahogany color with moderate head of big bubbles. Aromas of toffee, brown sugar, malt extract, and a hint of piney hops. Flavors are similar, though the hops are a lot more pronounced, and come out as grass and pine in the finish. Quite hot.

650ml bottle Pours dark orange with a white bubbly head. Aroma of malts, caramel, toffee and faint hints of hops. Taste is malty, sweet and sticky with some grassy bitterness, syrupy toffee and berries. Finish is sweet, malty and boozy with some toffee, bitterness and sticky syrup. Quite generic and boring US barley wine.

65 cl bottle @ home, no BBE info
Aroma has caramel, woody tones, some toffee, hints of resin and vanilla. Feels heavy. Flavour has sweet caramel malt, toffee, ripe fruits and some hops with grapefruit. Also some berry juice in the finish. Creamy palate. Quite typical American BW – nothing disturbing (except the sweetness) but nothing special either.
