Maybe you’ve seen him. Maybe you’ve only heard about him. He’s tricky like that, dear old Crunkle Sam. But a good time seems to follow him wherever it goes, also a bad ass bald eagle.

Mild wood nose. Cloudy rust, thick yellow head with little retention. While the aroma was mild, there is nothing mild about the flavor. Strong and complex, full bodied, alcohol juts a touch too hot even for the style. Wood, triple sec, grapefruit, overripe orange. Lemongrass sneaks out in the finish. Muddled, but nicely balanced. My kind of barleywine!

Cloudy dark amber color with generous compact head. Nice aroma, with malt, almonds, apricot kernels, light phenol. Good body strength, but leaner than most other Barley Wines, moderately sweet, with rustic mouthfeel; caramel and malt flavor, bitter oranges, and strong bitterness, with a lot of hop resins.
Hardly exciting.

Hazy amber color with small head. Malt aroma with a good degree of fruity esters. The body strength is good, but the mouthfeel is dryish, and a bit too much carbonated; caramel flavor, with a strong nutty component, and traces of toffee; the sweetness is quite low, the bitterness is strong; a lot of fruity and resiny hops, bitter oranges.
It seems a bit messy, not very Barley Wine also. And the strong nuts are a bit disturbing.

Bottle @ ZZT 9 shared by benzai. Almost red colour with a small sized beige head. Smells hops, malts, barleywine, sweet. Tastes barleywine, sweet, apricot and hops. Medium to full body with soft carbo.

Bottled @ ZZT 9, small sample. Hazy copper color, short head. Aroma of raisin, caramel, biscuit. Bitter, biscuity, bit sweet. A bit in between a DIPA and a barley wine or american strong ale. One way or another, great beer.

650ml bottle. Cloudy copperish colour with late awakening, small to average, creamy, fairly lasting, moderately lacing, off-white to pale ochre head. Citrusy, herbal hop aroma, hints of lemon and bitter lemon. Taste is caramel malty, toffee notes, bitter and minimally citrusy hoppy overtones, a minimally soapy touch, some warming alcohol in the finish.

Bottle @ ZZT 9 thanks to myself. Hazy light to medium reddish color, small off-white to beige head that lasts for a decent while. Don’t get a lot of aroma, but that might be because it’s a bit too cold. Taste malts, slightly some alcoholic sweetness, a touch of alcohol, hops, bitterness. Medium to full body, medium carbonation.

Bottle - Boozy caramel and spiced orange earthy hops. Dark clear amber with a decent beige head. Dark toffee, prune and date with some vinous notes. A good example, although the hops are a bit lost in the flavor.

22 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 5/15/2013. Pours slightly hazy deep ruby red color with a 1-2 finger dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of grapefruit, orange peel, raisin, pear, caramel, toast, toffee, brown sugar, floral, grass, light pine, and floral/toasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/earthy hops and dark/bready malt notes; with good strength. Taste of grapefruit, orange peel, raisin, pear, caramel, toast, toffee, brown sugar, floral, grass, light pine, and floral/toasted earthiness. Fair amount of floral/pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, orange peel, raisin, pear, caramel, toast, toffee, brown sugar, floral, grass, light pine, and floral earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity of citrus/floral hop and dark/toasted malt flavors; with a great malt/hop balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very smooth and fairly slick/sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice barleywine. All around good balance and complexity of citrus/floral hop and dark/toasted malt flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

Thx! to ST247. 650 ml. bottle sampled. Almost murky nutty amber, small bubbles. Smalls of pecans (more), hazelnuts, touch woody & nutty oxidation, sugary, brown cane sugar, touch dark fruits. Tastes is light oxidation, touch metallic, brown cane sugar, pecan (mainly these) and hazelnuts, palm nut sugar, oily, touch citrus peel, caramel sticky. Body feels a bit thinned out. Solid and enjoyable beer but lack the power and refinement of a greater example and comes across as feeling a bit like a whole bunch of ingredients together.
