Let’s just get one thing straight. A smooth rich 22 of good sippin’ barleywine makes me very happy. So this 22oz (yes!) pours with a clear deep copper body that has amber hues and supports an off white head of foam. The aroma offers up classic sweet dark fruity ester notes like prunes, cherries and dates all dusted in brown sugar as well as molasses and a firm booze note at the end of the draw. American Barleywine? At this point no it is not. Smells like a really good sippin’ young English style barleywine. The taste is similar with sweet dark fruity esters such as ripe cherries and prunes sliding into dates mixed with molasses. In the background I get a mild fairly vague hoppy bitterness that remains well below the smooth sweet dark fruity ester notes. Smooth rich and yummy and a tad boozy too. Who cares if the hops take a back seat. Good stuff.

Bottle. Deep fiery orange-red body, medium dissipating clumping beige head. Syrupy nose with lots of sweet and bitter citrus (mostly grapefruit) peel, sweet toast, and alcohol notes. Lots of slick, syrupy, sweet/tangy citrus in the body. After the initial intense citrus onslaught, rounder, fuller, sweet and toasty malts ensconce the palate, finishing with a bitter hops kick and notes of alcohol. There are also some floral, peppery elements, but this beer is mostly an onslaught of citrus and sugars.

Pours clear deep mahogany into a snifter. Off-white head with excellent retention pancakes and recedes leaving trailing sheets. Caramel, resin and pine aromas. Thick with caramel and toffee upfront turning to hot resin and pine in the lasting finish...Similar to Double Bastard...
