The original ale first brewed in 1965 and now sold all over the world. Perhaps the most distinctive Scottish ale on the market and with its rich dark oakiness, this is a serious winter ale.

Bottle. Color: Dark copper, off-white head. Aroma: Malt, caramel, hop, dark dried fruit. Taste: Dark malt, medium sweet, subtle caramel notes, notes of dark dried fruit like plums. Hints of liquorice, herbs, fudge, vanilla, brown sugar and oak. Light hints of booze. Moderate hopbitter. Over medium body, soft carbonation. Hopbitter malty caramel finish. Very complex, well balanced and very smooth. One of the most complex and best traditional UK beers in my opinion.

Bottle, 0.33l. Deep amber pour, thin off-white layer on top. Good lacing. Nose is caramel malt, oak, pine. Herbal notes. Medium body, soft carbonation. Thick texture, nicely creamy. Taste is slightly on the sweet side with warming and slightly bitter alcohol bite. Caramel malts and sugar in the aroma. Toffee. Dried fruits. Wooden barrel notes, herbal, peppery. Liquor, slightly boozy. Dry. Mild roastiness. Medium lasting finish. Overall, pretty good brew. Gets even better when it warms up a bit. Tasty.

Clear red-brown beer with a thin head. Smells of malt, fruit and caramel. Taste is dried fruit, malt, toffee, a touch of citrus, a little alcohol-y and with a sharp, dry aftertaste.

From old tasting notes. Bottle from the 1980’s. Brew 179; Bottle # 267634. Barely translucent burgundy red color with a small creamy brown head. Superb roasted malt aroma with a mildly complex vinous, sweetish character. Intense roasted malt flavor with a rich semisweet background. Finish becomes tart and fruity with a hint of dryness. Delicious, long, pleasing subtle Malty aftertaste. Rich, full bodied and well rounded. A classic.

500ml bottle. Pours a clear dark red-brown with a medium, fluffy, long lasting, beige head that leaves curtains of lace. Sweet aroma of caramel malt, overripe fruit and oak. Sweet flavour of caramel malt, overripe fruit, licorice, vanilla, light roast and oak with a dry, bitter, alcohol warming finish. Medium body with an oily texture and average carbonation. Decent.

Bottle from Beers of Europe, near Kings Lynn. Drunk at home. Light to mid-brown with a reddish hue. Translucent with a small white head. Toffee aroma with light whisky notes in the aroma. There’s also a slight whiff of sulphur. Strong, sweet taste with some peppery hops. Long finish starts sweet but the sweetness fades leaving a trace of dry hoppy bitterness. Aftertaste of dates and rye bread with more whisky. This is pretty special.

330ml bottle. Dark reddish brown with a big off white head that fizzed away quite quickly. Aroma is sweet, fruit, alcohol. Flavour matches with a soft, woody finish. Good
