Bottled. A brown beer with a huge brown head. The aroma is slightly smoked combined with light notes of malt, caramel, and rope. The flavor is sweet malty with notes of caramel as well as lighter notes of smoke, and rope, leading to a dry slightly bitter and slightly smoked and toffeeish finish. Too little smoke for my liking.

Mmm. Feels like a marzen as the base beer. Deep ruddy coppy color, moderate head. Big initial smoke aroma with layers of heavy melanoidiny malts beneath. Notes of dark heavy breads and orange cake. Flavor quite similar, slick with a caramelized heavy sweetness and a smoky bite throughout. Lingering sweetness is almost cloying but not quite. Very well done!

From iowaherkeye, now why the heck is this not distributed in my area and by my area I mean the whole Mid-Atlantic and Northeast? I mean we get the other beers from this brewery (including the overpriced Lust) but not this, f’in eh. Luckily I received it in a trade, thanks Joey. Anyway...Beautiful radiant amber body with orange tints, which allows for a medium clarity. Small head but a sticky lacing. Aroma is sweet smokiness that counterbalanced by a clean lagered maltiness. There is also a heft to the aroma. Taste is again a hefty clean lager with some un-sweet fruits, which are backed up by smoke. Average carbonation and low bitterness. 12oz bottle, Hobgoblin tulip glass.

Copper beer with a big off-white head. Malt and grass in the aroma, with smoke staying in the background. Sweet and malty, with a hint of molasses, and smoke in the finish.

Bottled. Deep golden colour, mediumsized white head. Aroma is sweet malts and hops with slight smokyness. Flavour is smoked wood, slight fruits and some salty notes. Quite pleasant.

Bottle at GBBF 2007. Very attractive chestnut colour, thin beige head. Definitely smoky, but a bit of candy sugar and thin. Over carbonated. Bit disappointing. Good smoke though. Oily.

Bright golden-brown. Rich cold-smoke...deep earthy caramelly malts as well. The body is somewhat slick and caramelly, with a smokey signature. I love the smoke but the underlying lager lacks that certain something...I don’t like the caramel and it doesn’t work well with the smoke.

Aroma of smoked cheese. Coppery color with a frothy white head. It’s so firm it has neither disappeared or laced. Probably won’t lace much. Starts with smoke, medium body, develops malt sweetness with swishing. The smoke is at every stage. Towards the end there seems to be a bit of sour. Not finding any bitter sensations. The smoke is strong enough to cover hop notes, if any. Reminds me of landjager sausage. Not an everyday drink (for me), but I’d have it again. It goes very well with pepper turkey on ciabatta.

I guess I’m not getting these beers yet. They’re obnoxiously expensive for 12 oz filtered bottles and they’re quite dead tasting, not to mention fairly fizzy from the artificial carbonation, and filtered leading to a hardness on the palate and aroma dulling. Smoke flavor and aroma are enjoyable enough, but there’s little more than simple, sweet caramel to go with the smoke. I guess my tastes are just too linked to the mouthfeel/texture of a beer, be that a good or bad thing.
