The underrated dark horse of the original Augment trio; Patternist gained a massive following thanks to its no frills El Dorado and Simcoe hop bill, albeit hopped up to the absolute nines, and its ornate tiling artwork garnering amazing feedback. We’ve revisited beer two of the three original Augment beers with another run in tallboys, and treated with all the new techniques we’ve learned in the last half a year. Expect all kinds of high juice and low bitterness notes bursting from this incredible IPA – welcome back, Patternist.

Cans from Honest Brew (2019) and House Of Trembling Madness (2023). Hazy golden/bronze body with a white head. No visible carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of peach, waxed melon and a hint of glue. Flavour of pineapple and straw. Medium body with a smooth texture. Soft fizz. I rated this a 4.5 in 2019, but the version I’m trying in 2023 is much drier and pithier, and (for me) it’s fine but nowhere near as good.

Can at home, 24/07/19. Hazed orange with a decent off white cap that dissipates to a swirl. Nose is bitter orange, mango, papaya, light pine, juicy tropical fruit medley. Taste comprises sweet malts, ripe melon, pineapple, pine resin, lick of Um Bongo, papaya. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with lashings of juicy to resinous hop bitterness. Solid juicy IPA.

- Can. Hazy gold beer, decent pale cream colour head. Airy palate, semi dry, decent fine carbonation. Fluffy and semi dry pale malts, modest creamy sweet. The El Dorado and Simcoe hops provide a mild piney spice into some mildly tangy floral citrus. Maybe some Sakura, if you know to look for it, pretty mild. Mellow lemon - orange. Very light hop spice. Smooth finish. Not bad but again could do with a little more hop intensity.

Can from Brewklopedia, Leicester. Shared at home. Dark olive gold, impenetrably murky with a small creamy white head. Scent is dank, slightly medicinal and juicy with pineapple, melon, mint standing out. Unweildy taste which starts sweet, turns gently bitter and ends with a flourish of astringency. Quite boozy, it tastes stronger than it is. Decent IPA.
