Bold, smoky character with a smooth malty finish. The first thing one notices about a Samuel Adams® Bonfire Rauchbier is the deep smoky flavor which is balanced by a blend of malts that provide hints of caramel & toffee sweetness.

12oz bottle, presumably out of a fall mix pack, drunk straight out of a bottle, so I’ll give appearance a generic "3." Aroma had slightly smokey character, sweet malts, typical "Sam" aroma. Flavor was, a bit smokey, but not really all that powerful or overpowering. I’m not a huge "rauchbier" fan, so the more subtle characteristics of this one were a bit more enjoyable. Certainly no where as refreshing as I had hoped.

12oz bottle. Glowing red-amber, this beige head. Sweet, smoky aroma. A pretty solid offering from SA, I don’t see how some reviews say this isn’t smoky. It certainly is, but also has a nice balance. Smooth, medium body, quite drinkable. The fruity ale tones add to the depth, mixing well with the mild soapy orangey hops. A nice Rauchbier all the way, albiet not lagered.

12 ounce bottle from a sampler. Pours a clear dark red color with a medium creamy tan head. Decent head retention. Aroma of toffeeish malts and smoky notes. The taste is smoked malts with a faintly fruity finish. Some nuttiness and mild hops. Medium bodied.

Bottle @ home. I’ve always really enjoyed Samuel Adams seasonals, so I am very excited to try this one. Dark brown appearance with a medium sized tan head. Toasty, burnt, smoky wood, dark caramel, toffee aroma. Toasty, caramel, bacon, mildly smoky, burnt woody flavor. The smokiness is very tame but the beer is an overall good beer.

12oz bottle out of the fall mix pack. Pours with a pretty full head and a clear body. Otherwise, no smoke, just a fatty, sweet lager . No smoke and fatty lagering, eh, why do I waste my time. Even Saranac made a cleaner and smokier Rauch.

Location: 12 oz bottle from some bottle shop in Little Rock, 9/14/11

Aroma: This one has some light smoke on nose, caramel, some malts, and a little wood
Appearance: It pours a clearish dark caramel color into the glass with a fizzy beige head
Flavor: The flavor is slightly more smoky then the nose, as well as being somewhat malty
Palate: The body is really smooth and creamy, and this one has a decently lengthy duration to it
Overall Impression: I gotta say, I was surprised to see this one. I had no clue that Sam Adams made a Rauchbier. Apparently this is part of one of their variety packs? I'm guessing your average consumer of the Sam Adams variety pack is not expecting a Rauchbier to be part of the pack! Anyway, this is a barely rauchbier, but it's still pretty solid. low 3s, not bad, but

12 oz. bottle. Pours dark orange with a small beige head. The aroma is caramel, dirt, and a hickory wood fire. The flavor is very sweet, and the smoke is faint and chemical. The palate is medium to heavy, sticky, and astringent. Overall, this is a pale imitation of true rauchbiers. It probably wouldn’t be that bad if I weren’t such a fan of Aecht Schlenkerla Eiche and Märzen.
