Basilius is a dark copper-colored beer with 7% alc.. This thirst-quenching beer gets its soft caramel aromas exclusively from the barley malts used. The hop varieties Amarillo and Saaz, on the other hand, provide a subtle fruity (orange) and spicy aroma and a refined bitterness. EBC 57. Density 16° Plato.

750mL bottle, split with manuchampions, Matts_Property and uhlan, pours a dark reddish brown with a thick off-white head - lots of sediment. Aroma of spices, pepper, sort of rye bread, and some floral notes. Flavour is sort of like a dark malt saison with Belgian spices, chocolatey-ish malts, and subtle orange [peel]. Nice melange of spices, with light molasses and light toasted bread. Very enjoyable.

Bottle at Hasselt Beer Festival, Hasselt, Limburg, Belgium 12.11.11 in company of Loz, Jackie, Simon and David. Pours mid amber with lacing atop. Fresh and rather fruity, good bittersweet beer. My notes are rather sketchy with this one I’m afraid. A6 A4 T7 P4 Ov13 3.4

Good cream-coloured head with some lace over deep red-copper beer. Lightly smoked - like roasted chestnuts and roast malts, faintly spiced smelling. Taste turns out to be more bitter than expected, and definitely spiced; pinch of cacaopowder. Quite slick, well-bodied, even a bit chewy. Interesting, but not really great. Strikes me as a rather Walloon-style strong ale.
