Imperial Porter
Due to our participation in at least a half a dozen collaborations each year, one might perceive Stone as the craft beer equivalent of a beer flitting indiscriminately from one brewery to the next, all the while drawing precious nectar- the expertise and creativity of those institutions’ brewmasters.
Another buzzy operation that gets the same rap is Bluejacket, a new Washington DC-based operation headed by industry veteran and constant collaborator, Megan O’Leary Parisi. But make no mistake, Stone and Bluejacket are intensely selective about the contemporaries we invite into our brewhouses. We look for the same high level of passion and daringness to flip a beer style on its head that we employ on a daily basis. So, when Parisi and Stone brewmaster, Mitch Steele, decided to collaborate, it was essential that they tap a special individual to complete theyr triad of fermentation domination, and they found just that in Tonya Cornett, the brewmaster at Bend, Oregon’s 10 Barrel Brewing Company.
Together, they decided on a sturdy yet velvety base of imperial porter and developed a plan to celebrate the bounty of the environs in which it was produced by harvesting avocado honey, jasmine and calendula flowers (some from our very own Stone Farms) and infusing them into the beer to create something complex and uniquely Southern Californian. Consider it craft cross-pollination at its finest.

Draft at Taps 25, Lansing. Deep opaque brown-black body, medium dense beige head. Ashy nose with notes of cedar. Rich body with notes of cherry and dark fruits, licorice, roast, and coffee bean. Tannic, sweet and roasty but not thick or syrupy. Very good.

22 oz. bottle, pours black with a small beige head. Aroma is full of floral notes, honey, and jasmine, along with some light roasted malts. Flavour brings out wild flowers, honey and lighter notes of the jasmine. Roasted malts are somewhere underneath, but pretty masked by the flowers and honey. Good stuff, but too dominated by the additives.

From a 22 oz bottle shared in Avon NC. Pours a clear almost black cola brown with a thin tan head. Roasted malt nose. Flavors of plums, licorice and some tobacco. Smooth mouthfeel, moderate carbonation. Roasty, moderately bitter finish.

Bottle from Redstone. Pours a fairly clear dark brown with faint garnet highlights when held to light and a fluffy tan head that persists forever. Aromas of caramel and chocolate with light sweet sugary malt aromas. honey and light non descript flowery aromas round out the nose. Little to no hop aroma. The flavor is milk chocolate vanilla and caramel with a light honey like sweetness. There’s a touch of alcohol flavor and a light earthy hop flavor. Spicy and floral notes really confuse the the whole porter thing. Medium body with a silky creamy mouthfeel and a moderate level of carbonation. Drinkable and it kind of grew on me as a drank it, but still a bit weird for my palette.

On Tap at Bier Thirty dark brown black in the snifter with a lucky pillowy tan head. Heavy lacing. Standard dark roast aroma, muffled by the very cold serving temp. Bitter roast flavors. Very slight espresso notes. Plenty of Imp Porters out there for half the price

Draft at ChurchKey launch. Poured a nice deep, brown color, when held up to the light there are notes of dark ruby red edges around the glass with a small, brown head that quickly dissipated. Aroma was some chocolate notes, some light coffee and a touch of anise. Flavor was a ton of cocoa notes, some light coffee (not bitter), and anise. A touch dry on the finish provides a nice palate. Alcohol is hidden almost entirely, it’s smooth and creamy and tasty.
