Imperial Porter

Due to our participation in at least a half a dozen collaborations each year, one might perceive Stone as the craft beer equivalent of a beer flitting indiscriminately from one brewery to the next, all the while drawing precious nectar- the expertise and creativity of those institutions’ brewmasters.

Another buzzy operation that gets the same rap is Bluejacket, a new Washington DC-based operation headed by industry veteran and constant collaborator, Megan O’Leary Parisi. But make no mistake, Stone and Bluejacket are intensely selective about the contemporaries we invite into our brewhouses. We look for the same high level of passion and daringness to flip a beer style on its head that we employ on a daily basis. So, when Parisi and Stone brewmaster, Mitch Steele, decided to collaborate, it was essential that they tap a special individual to complete theyr triad of fermentation domination, and they found just that in Tonya Cornett, the brewmaster at Bend, Oregon’s 10 Barrel Brewing Company.

Together, they decided on a sturdy yet velvety base of imperial porter and developed a plan to celebrate the bounty of the environs in which it was produced by harvesting avocado honey, jasmine and calendula flowers (some from our very own Stone Farms) and infusing them into the beer to create something complex and uniquely Southern Californian. Consider it craft cross-pollination at its finest.

New Beer Distributors, NYC 650ml ($8): Pours dark brown with a tan-beige head. Aroma is mild fruitiness, some honey, chocolate. but I don’t really get too much of the calendula (and this is coming from someone who used to use calendula lip gunk)... But, in the taste I am definitely getting a floral and honey combination going. In fact that is the first taste. It follows with a moderate roastiness. Very low amount of bitterness, but the hops are still there. Fortunately, this is not too sweet. Good beer all around. Interesting and unique for sure.

Black pour with a mocha head. The aroma is cocoa, coffee roast malts. Smooth creamy body delivers a rich flavored brew. The flavor follows the aroma.

Black color with generous beige head. The aroma is mild, but with pleasant notes of wood-oven baked bread. The mouthfeel is smooth and lean; the roasted malt flavor is not aggressive, some breadcrust; there is a touch of dark chocolate and liquorice, and a hint of flowers; the bitterness is lower than expected.
Graceful brew.

Bomber from Beer Run shared at the April 5, 2014 Charlottesville tasting. Pours a clear dark brown color with a thin frothy tan head. Decent head retention. Aroma of strong honey and floral notes, chocolate, roast, nutty notes. The taste is roasted malts, nuts, honey, bitter floral notes. Medium bodied, low carbonation, slight booze.

Bottle, shared with my wife & my friend Yo. Served in a snifter. Really interesting nose of flowers in bloom & chocolate. Medium bodied with a creamy smooth mouthfeel. The taste is pretty good, creamy rich chocolate, flowers jasmine & I guess calendula, some honey. Good but subtle, minor roast notes. A solid beer but I am not sure if it is worth the 15$ price tag in Japan. ---having this many months late it has mellowed out alot and become much smoother and enjoyable bumping it up a bit.
