Imperial Porter
Due to our participation in at least a half a dozen collaborations each year, one might perceive Stone as the craft beer equivalent of a beer flitting indiscriminately from one brewery to the next, all the while drawing precious nectar- the expertise and creativity of those institutions’ brewmasters.
Another buzzy operation that gets the same rap is Bluejacket, a new Washington DC-based operation headed by industry veteran and constant collaborator, Megan O’Leary Parisi. But make no mistake, Stone and Bluejacket are intensely selective about the contemporaries we invite into our brewhouses. We look for the same high level of passion and daringness to flip a beer style on its head that we employ on a daily basis. So, when Parisi and Stone brewmaster, Mitch Steele, decided to collaborate, it was essential that they tap a special individual to complete theyr triad of fermentation domination, and they found just that in Tonya Cornett, the brewmaster at Bend, Oregon’s 10 Barrel Brewing Company.
Together, they decided on a sturdy yet velvety base of imperial porter and developed a plan to celebrate the bounty of the environs in which it was produced by harvesting avocado honey, jasmine and calendula flowers (some from our very own Stone Farms) and infusing them into the beer to create something complex and uniquely Southern Californian. Consider it craft cross-pollination at its finest.

Bottled:
Eye: Black with a small-ish head.
Nose: Toffee, licorice, honey, ink.
Mouth: Smooth and round, a bit thin.
Tongue: Toffee, licorice, some honey, ink, harsh bitterness.
Brain: A disappointment; the flavours goes in all kinds of directions before they gets over run by the massive, inky bitterness.

Mild chocolate nose. Black, thick tan head, good lacing. Full body, easy carbonation Powerful tobacco and horehound flavor. Grass and char on the back end. Kind of a grainy heartiness throughout, satisfying and versatile with food pairing. Begging for red meat in a sweet marinade or glaze. Well balanced and varied. I didn’t pick up any of the exotic additives, but it hardly matters. An excellent imperial porter that hasn’t been subjected to vile bourbon barrel aging.

Bottle at Fastelavn Smagning 2014 @ J&C’s beer palace, Jutland Saturday Session 2 - 01/03/14. Dark mahgony brown with a moderate beige covering. Nose is light roast, chocolate, dark malts, toffee fudge, chocolate fudge brownies. Taste comprises earthy cocoa powder, herbal tang, Jasmine tea, brown sugars. Medium bodied, fine carbonation. Ok drinkable affair but lacking depth for the ABV presented.

Shared bottle at hotel room tasting. Black colour. Weird aroma and flavour of flowers, but interesting. Also notes of liquorice. Might well sample again.

Bottle, 22oz. It pours a clear, reddish dark brown body under a dense, tan head of moderate size. The aroma has a sweetish chocolate touch and roasted malts. Some coffee too. The flavor is more interesting, with sweetness, roasted malts, coffee and semi-dark chocolate. Full body, with a soft and pleasant carbonation. Lasting finish with chocolate, coffee and roasted malts. Starts off a bit boring this one, but it’s sure a nice one once you start drinking. 140301
