Imperial Porter

Due to our participation in at least a half a dozen collaborations each year, one might perceive Stone as the craft beer equivalent of a beer flitting indiscriminately from one brewery to the next, all the while drawing precious nectar- the expertise and creativity of those institutions’ brewmasters.

Another buzzy operation that gets the same rap is Bluejacket, a new Washington DC-based operation headed by industry veteran and constant collaborator, Megan O’Leary Parisi. But make no mistake, Stone and Bluejacket are intensely selective about the contemporaries we invite into our brewhouses. We look for the same high level of passion and daringness to flip a beer style on its head that we employ on a daily basis. So, when Parisi and Stone brewmaster, Mitch Steele, decided to collaborate, it was essential that they tap a special individual to complete theyr triad of fermentation domination, and they found just that in Tonya Cornett, the brewmaster at Bend, Oregon’s 10 Barrel Brewing Company.

Together, they decided on a sturdy yet velvety base of imperial porter and developed a plan to celebrate the bounty of the environs in which it was produced by harvesting avocado honey, jasmine and calendula flowers (some from our very own Stone Farms) and infusing them into the beer to create something complex and uniquely Southern Californian. Consider it craft cross-pollination at its finest.

Draft from BrewDog, Shepherd’s Bush on 7 December 2013. Poured black with a dense beige head. Roasty aroma of coffee and dark chocolate. Initial flavours of liquorice, roasted malt and burnt sugar. Full, rich mouth feel. Finish was earthy with notes of grassy hop and espresso.

I think this was on tap - Pours near black with a tan head. The aroma is of roast malt, cocoa, and even flowery. The flavor is sweet chocolate malt with herbal character. It may be the jasmine that I’m getting there. There’s also a subtle fruitiness. It has a creamy full body and finishes with a roasted, pleasant bitterness. Really, really good. Fantastic brew.

Pours a fairly dark black color and leaves the same color body with a slightly off-white foamy one and a half finger head that dies at a moderate pace leaving some clingy foamy lacing in its wake; the aroma has some light floral (I’m guessing its the calendula flowers, the bottle describes) notes that are up front and I do get the jasmine and honey coming through in a sweet way; the taste is mainly sweet through the previously mentioned flavors but the normal \"roastiness\" of an American Porter comes through, roasty yet floral aftertaste, dry sweet finish; easy on the palate - uh...perhaps maybe; overall, I would say a very well done American Porter, alcohol seems to be well hidden

Bomber. Chocolate nose, raisin, herbs. Pretty head on a cloudy black beer. Much more herbal in the flavor, chocolate and coffee. Camomile (maybe that’s the calendula?), grassy, floral, herbs, tobacco. Don’t really get the jasmine. Some honey. OK. Too much herb.

Barely translucent dark brown color topped by a smallish bubbly tan head. Aroma has notes of cocoa, roasted malt, plastic brownies and fragrant honey. Upfront, finding notes of baked bittersweet chocolate, jasmine and herbal bitter hops.. This is complex and funky, with lot’s of chocolate and roasted malt. The jasmine and honey are noticeable, but the malt is dominant here. There is a push of spicy hops in the finish along with a subtle woody, earthy nuance. Over all, quite tasty.

Keg at BD Camden. It pours black with a thick, dense light tan head. The nose is milk chocolate, toffee, chocolate powder, honey and coffee grinds. The taste is initially of sweet milk chocolate, then roasted malt, charred wood, earth, floral soapiness, toffee, toast and decent bitterness with a dry, earthy finish. Full body, moderate carbonation and oily mouth-feel. Soapiness seems to become quite dominant the more you drink. A decent enough beer nonetheless.

Keg at Brewdog Edinburgh. Pours a hazy near back with a thin off-white head. Aromas of coffee and toffee. Taste is sweet, more coffee bitterness, but could take a bit more. Texture is thin considering the strength. Out of the three tried that night (alongside Black Eye Joe & W00t), this was the least impressive.
