  Strong Ale - English Regular
Score
6.44

First brewed in 1998 to celebrate Shepherd Neame's tercentenary, this copper-bronze, bottle conditioned beauty is an intense yet uniquely intricate offering thrice-hopped during the brewing process. This adds rich resinous notes and spikes of citrus to a moreish strong ale already rife with notes of liquorice, Masala wine, caramel and spicy orange. A frisson of dark fruit freshens the finish.

Bottle from a Sainsbury's supermarket. Color: Clear amber, off-white head. Aroma: Caramel malt, floral hop. Taste: Caramel malt, hints of liquorice and dark dried fruit, floral hop. Moderate to over moderate sweet and bitter. Dry-ish, bittery finish. Just over medium body, smooth mouthfeel, below average carbonation.

Bottles. Clear deep golden body with a white head. Steady carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of honey, rust, red apple and nutty malt. Flavour of fig roll, hot cross bun and copper penny. Medium body with a slick mouthfeel. Soft fizz. A sweet, slightly metallic beer - more complex than I expected for the price point. This reminds me of McEwans Champion (will need to do a side-by-side tasting).

0.5 l bottle. Pours clear amber color with no head. Fruity notes and slight hoppy bitterness in aroma and taste. Short bitterish finish, light to medium body, soft carbonation. Not too complex yet good balanced brew.
