First brewed in 1998 to celebrate Shepherd Neame's tercentenary, this copper-bronze, bottle conditioned beauty is an intense yet uniquely intricate offering thrice-hopped during the brewing process. This adds rich resinous notes and spikes of citrus to a moreish strong ale already rife with notes of liquorice, Masala wine, caramel and spicy orange. A frisson of dark fruit freshens the finish.

Bottle from Tesco. Clear deep golden body with a white head. Steady carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of honey, rust, red apple and nutty malt. Flavour of fig roll, hot cross bun and copper penny. Medium body with a slick mouthfeel. Soft fizz. A sweet, slightly metallic beer - more complex than I expected for the price point. This reminds me of McEwans Champion (will need to do a side-by-side tasting).

0.5 l bottle. Pours clear amber color with no head. Fruity notes and slight hoppy bitterness in aroma and taste. Short bitterish finish, light to medium body, soft carbonation. Not too complex yet good balanced brew.

Goryczka do średniej, wysycenie niskie do średniego, ciało w normie.

Bottle from Asda online. It pours clear brown with a sturdy off - white head. The aroma is sweet, molasses, dried fruits, cherry, blueberry, Eccles cake, liquorice, fruit & nut chocolate, and toasty grain. The taste is dry, bitter - sweet, toothy, chewy, toasty brown sugars, candied fruits, dried berries, cola cubes, cherry cola, earthy, leafy, varnished oak and warming alcohol boost with a drying, chewy finish. Average body and moderate, prickly carbonation. Fruity cola boost vibes. Not a huge amount of depth. Ok.
