First brewed in 1998 to celebrate Shepherd Neame's tercentenary, this copper-bronze, bottle conditioned beauty is an intense yet uniquely intricate offering thrice-hopped during the brewing process. This adds rich resinous notes and spikes of citrus to a moreish strong ale already rife with notes of liquorice, Masala wine, caramel and spicy orange. A frisson of dark fruit freshens the finish.

Pours a clear light copper colour with no head. Aromas of caramel, fruit cake, a little spice and a little alcohol. Taste has the same notes again, caramel, fruit cake, alcohol, more spice, some burnt toasty bread and also a touch of sweet honey on the finish. Medium body, average carbonation and smooth oily mouthfeel. Very nice winter warmer.

500ml bottle @home. Ambrata, limpida, schiuma bianco-sporca media. Al naso note di caramello, toffee, nocciola, burro fuso. In bocca รจ dolce all'attacco, caramellata, con chiusura amara a bilanciare, leggera. Corpo medio, carbonazione media. Piuttosto anonima.

Rocky off white head stayed on a slowly carbonating copper coloured body. Fruity English hops & malt aroma. Medium bodied, soft on the palate with a lively back. Well balanced with fruity hops, malts, berries, spices & a sweet finish. What a lovely pint.

500ml bottle straight from the fridge. Amber colour with thin head. Aroma of toffee, hops and mixed fruit. Low carbonation. Tastes very sweet with flavours of dried fruits, malt and caramel. Less bitterness at the end than I was expecting. Stronger than what I am used to but nice and quite a warm feeling when it goes down. I can see this as a beer alternative to mulled wine in winter. My first sip of this style, I may try this brew again in 6 months at room temperature.

Bottle from ASDA Very little aroma at all to this one โ€“ maybe some hops ? Pours a clear orange-brown with (very briefly) a frothy white head. Sweet malts on the tongue, followed by some ginger, raisins and walnuts. A fiery bitter finish, with some alcoholic strength finally showing in the throat. Reasonable, but not outstanding.
