First brewed in 2008 at our original brewery in downtown Kalamazoo, Oarsman Ale grew out of our desire to explore the tradition of session beers and to create a unique, flavorful experience for everyone, no matter what the occasion.
Tart and refreshing, this sessionable, bright Wheat Ale exudes citrus and lemony aromas from Cascade hops and trades sour intensity for finesse. A perfect companion for any occasion, Oarsman Ale is a beer based in tradition, but with that distinctive Bell’s twist.
A perfect beer to compliment any menu.

Galway Arms, Chicago tap ($5.50): Pours a hazy orange with a white head. Aroma is wheaty with a slight sour note in there. Lemon makes a little appearance. Taste is pretty straightforward. It is slightly sweet, and it has a slight Berliner Weiss aspect to it. This would be very easy to session. Didn’t have as much complexity as I would have hoped.

Tap at eccentric. Orange-apple and wheat malt aroma. Hazy pale yellow color with small head. Sweet-tart orange-vinegar and wheat malt flavor.

Having trouble making up my mind about this beer. On the one hand, it’s fascinating, with a layered, rolling flavor that never stays in one place. On the other, it’s an underhopped, mildly sweet weak wheat beer. The former is based in curiosity, the latter in cynicism. The truth is closer to Famous Potatoes. In the end, the tartness keeps bringing me back, so I’m pretty sure I like this beer.

(bottle) clear yellow-gold colour with small white head; aroma of citrus, yeast; clean sour flavour - another beer for people who don’t really like the taste of beer? But the people who like beer can like it too!

Bottle from Bruisin Ales. Pours hazy lemon with a foamy white head. Aroma is citric with a touch of wheat. Med minus body. It’s almost sour citrus, followed by some papery wheat. Rather clean and refreshing in a light soda pop way.

12oz bottle. Hazy golden-tan. Thin, oily white head. Citrus, herbs, and wheat in the aroma..funky herb apricot I’ve really enjoyed this beer, and while it is hyper-poundable, I find myself sipping it slowly to enjoy it’s subtle nuances. Lemony wheat tones over a smooth golden malt body. The bottle I’m currently drinking is a touch faded, but still holds up well. A really unique and well done beer, maybe a little high in price.

12oz bottle pours clear bright gold with bright white head. The aroma is sour mash for sure and also offering up notes of grapefruit and lemon nuances as well as fresh wheat and soft faint semi ripe banana. The taste is crisp with sweetened wheat notes, a touch of banana, mild lemon like acidic notes, a pleasing funky note and a lingering sense of freshness requiring additional quaffs. It ends almost neutral in flavor as well as dry and refreshing. Wow!

bottle in Tampa. Didn’t like this beer at all - in fact, this is the first Bells beer I didn’t completely enjoy. 7/7/19 update - much better than i remembered - very solid beer

bottle - Pours gold with a one finger white head. It has a light aroma of yeast, wheat, and a touch of citrus. The flavor is sweet and very light. There’s citrus in there and a subdued wheat character. Bland. Everything is subdued here and to me it’s not just because their goal is a less intense session brew. Even for that it’s lacking. I’m not much of a wheat ale fan anyway, but there are certainly better ones out there. Kind of overrated.
