Good DIPA. Drake’s seems to be able to make IPAs in all sorts of different ways. This one probably wouldn’t be my pick for a new bottled beer from them, but it’s still a solid, enjoyable beer. This beer pours a transparent, medium amber with a foamy off-white head. The aroma is pine needles, pineapples, tangerines, candied lemon peel and papaya. It’s a big mess of hop notes. There’s also an apparent caramel malt backbone lurking underneath. The flavor has some acetone and is rather sweet for a West Coast DIPA, but it’s an enjoyable version of this type of DIPA. There’s a ton of bitter pine resin in the flavor, particularly the finish. The caramel malt is more apparent on the tongue, but there’s also some booziness in there. The mouthfeel is a tad harsh and boozy but nothing too bad. Carbonation is light. Despite the malt sweetness, the bitter finish is really doing a number on my palate. I’d reserve this one for the end of the night.

On tap. Beautiful clear amber with a fluffy tan head., aroma of fruity and hoppy overtones, caramel and greatness...Grass and citrus taste, very dry caramel, awesome! Very well balanced. Medium bubbles. Dry!

On tap. Clear amber golden with an off-white and lacing head. Sweetish peachy hop aroma. Quite full-bodied, sweet caramel and fat peachy hops that leave a surprisingly discreet bitterness. Warming alcohol in the finish. 070709

From tap at Stone Bistro. Pours hazy dark orange with a small white head. Grapefruity ad orange hoppy aroma. Flavour is grapefruity with a light touch of winegrapes and more solid grapefruity flavours. Smooth hoppy and light malt base flavoured finish. Nice and easy.

Draft @ Alembic Bar, SF. Pours a pale amber color with a small off-white head. Has a malty hoppy grapefruit aroma with some hints of caramel. Sweetish malty hoppy bitter citrus flavor with some hints of caramel. Has a sweetish malty hoppy bitter finish with s long bitter aftertaste.

On tap @ E. J. Phair in C-town. Pours a brilliant clear copper with lasting thin white head and impressive sheet lacing clinging to the glass. The modest aroma of sweet malts and grassy-piny hops is noticed covering up a meek amount of sugar sweet malts and faint caramelization. The taste begins with rich malty goodness. The malts are immediately attacked by a gale force storm of hops starting with pine then moving to crisp fresh green and grassy. It almost seems wet hopped. By midway I get a nice dose of grapefruit hops joining the fray. A malty sweet backbone is resistant to the mountain of hops and retains a precarious foot hold on the flavor. It ends with malt sweetness, hints of caramelization and a hop bite that is finally beginning to give in and eventually fade away. Fantastic brew! It could however use a bigger aromatic presence.

Tap at Bistros DIPA event. Reddish amber color with a slight off-white head. Very floral aroma. Full bodied with creamy carbonation. Flavor is more floral hop over roasted caramel. Not so bitter, but with time some creeps out in the finish. Really smooth and tasty.

GABF 2007. A clear golden beer with a thin orangey head. THe arom ais very grassy and grapefruity. The flavor is sweet malty with notes of alcohol and grapefruit, leading to a dry and very bitter finish.

Can at ZBF08. Powerful hop aroma, also very malty... Bonbon and caramel. Clear chestnut colour. Very small tan head. Very hoppy flavour, slightly biting hoppiness. Sharp grass finish. Very sweet but balanced well by the hops.

Can [Thanks to Phil_L] @ Zythos Bier Festival 2008, Sint Niklaas, Belgium. Unclear medium amber orange color with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly diminishing, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, caramel, moderate to heavy hoppy, pine, grape - orange. Flavor is moderate sweet and moderate to light heavy bitter with a long to average duration. Body is medium to full, texture is oily - syrupy, carbonation is soft to flat, finish feel is light to moderate alcoholic. (020308)
